I’d always had a sneaky suspicion about this and those suspicions have now been confirmed and vindicated in “Spotty Dopey” by multi-award-winning author and home-school tutor Kamau Mahakoe, who articulated that... “The parents, some of whom had once been children...” and “...Georgie, one of those adults who had once been a child...”I knew it!Those two sentences were not the only truths I discovered in this autobiographical work. The author writes about the spitefulness of children toward others who may have conditions which set them apart, and the snobbery of those who are fortunate enough to be from a more affluent situation.The descriptions are vivid, and the antics of the children and the actions of the adults are authentically typical. This author knows how to observe human nature and she certainly knows how to write.I do feel, however, that the book could have been fleshed out more – be more detailed in certain aspects. When the feisty young madam presented herself to the editor of the national newspaper I would have loved to have more detailed information as to the full dialogue between them before he agreed to her request. But from my perception of her I can allow my imagination to run riot!This book may not be a novel filled with action and suspense as such, but it is certainly a good read. It’s a refreshingly candid piece of writing which I thoroughly enjoyed. Although set in the outskirts of Kingston, it could quite easily have been set in almost any rural country district in Jamaica and will appeal to all Jamaicans who want to reminisce about their schooldays back in the 1980s and prior. It is nostalgic in that it reminded me of my own school days in my own country district. I highly recommend it. Another great work from the prolific author.

By Amazon Customer "Spotty Dopey" was, for me, a revelation.As I read the various anecdotes, I couldn't decide if I was excited or disappointed. Not with the writing -- for there is no question that Ms Mahakoe has a veritable gift in that area -- but with the certain knowledge that experiences I had thought were unique to me and those around me were actually more universal than I could ever have imagined. This peek into the life of a Jamaican girl brought back so many fond -- and not so fond -- memories for me. Mention of words like "Trapper Keeper," "Strawberry-flavoured lip gloss" and pink stationery transported me right back to my own experiences of life as a Jamaican girl. I could almost smell the number 2B pencils used for Common Entrance exams! If you know what I'm talking about, this book is for you!I enjoyed the book and will definitely be seeking out more of this author's work.
