4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A guided tour through the modern environmental movement By Larry Checco Reading Uncle Sam and Mother Earth by Jake Plante is equivalent to taking a personal guided tour through the entire modern environmental movement. Plante, an environmental activist, himself, ushers the reader into what it's like to be in the trenches of the movement by vividly describing his part in the 1977 Seabrook nuclear power plant protest, including being arrested and going on a hunger strike. Ironically, years later, Plante ends up working for the FAA on environmental issues and once again gives the reader a fascinating and personal tour through the belly of the beast. The book includes engaging profiles of the lions of the environmental movement, everyone from Theodore Roosevelt to Rachel Carson, Lady Bird Johnson to Al Gore and leaves one wondering why a book such as this hadn't been written years before. In-depth, engaging and full of insights into a movement we need to embrace, especially with climate change and global warming knocking down our door, this book is a must. read.
