I can still see her with my mind's eye, as if it happened recently. I remember crying myself to sleep many nights after that. And I was a tough kid. I can only imagine how children feel when their pets die. What do YOU say to your kid at a time like this? Do you even think about that when you flush his goldfish down the toilet? These childhood losses can have a life-shaping impact. Children may not be able to process what they feel, at least not in terms that grown-ups can understand. So, do those feelings simply go away, or do they embed themselves in the kid's subconscious and fester? I don't know. What worries me is the "What if" scenarios. What if a child who doesn't get a healthy closure and "hides" those feelings only to have them come out as aggression, depression, or anxiety. Or.... well, I am sure you can think of many possible negative outcomes. Heading them off before they become an issue can spare our youngsters days, weeks or months of grieving. That's what this little book does: it helps us help our children resolve the feelings that come with the death of a pet. When I finished reading the book I felt like I walked through a beautiful garden with a rainbow at the end. The verses have a sing-song quality that soothes in a meditative way. James Martinez' words become images that blend seamlessly with Timothy Civick's beautiful and happy drawings. And those drawings become music. Now you are in the middle of a musical. Your puppy went to the Final Stop, you see, "where playtime never ends." Those parents who think that telling kids the unvarnished "truth" creates good reality testing are full of... cotton clouds. Putting a child's mind at ease, having her feel free of guilt, or whatever kids feel, putting a smile on those darling faces instead of rivers of tears of disconsolation is worth anything. And that's exactly what this book accomplishes. I loved the concept, loved the execution, and loved the message.

This time he talks about grief for a pet. He has Patches, from “Patches Awesome Day”, discuss this very important emotion shared by all of us with his “Fuzzy Friend”. Timothy T. Civick has chosen a squirrel as the “Fuzzy Friend”, although it could be any animal. James addresses the loss of a pet by explaining “The Final Pet Stop” as a wonderful place where the pets are always playing and are never sick. He describes all of their activities and explains that there are different places for different animals. Children will be comforted as they learn to deal with the loss of their best friend, no matter what kind of pet it is. The book is a great one for parents to read to their children as they help the children sort out their feelings. As Patches says, speaking of “The Final Pet Stop”:“You only have to look to the cloudsTo know that it’s there”The rhyming quality of James’ writing is soothing and creates a very positive approach to a sensitive subject.Be sure to check out his other books:The Dinosaur’s New ShoesThe Most Incredible JourneyDiamonds in the RuffPatches Awesome DayUn Marillos Dia con Patches (Spanish edition)And watch for more books by this gifted author and talented illustrator.Part of the sales of the books goes to various charities.

Martinez and his illustrator, has done another wonderful service for parents with this little book "The Final Pet Stop." When we lose a pet, it can be a difficult time to explain this to little children, but this fantastic little book helps do that.Again, James and Tim did a fabulous job with the storyline, characters that are vibrant and colorful, and has an important lesson to teach kids, that there is a "resting place" where dogs and animals go to be happy, healthy and have fun after they leave us. Just another wonderful offering for children to learn and will enjoy this book. I like the imagination of the author, coming up with funny and cute characters. All of James children's books are carefully well written. It can also entertain your children while being an aid to help them and parents share understanding the passing of a animal and grief.I highly recommend it to parents, grand parents and teachers alike!
