About the Author Deborah is a Kentucky girl who suddenly finds herself longing for the rolling hills of the Bluegrass state. For three decades, she has lived north of Seattle and has grown used to the gray skies of western Washington. When the sun shines, Washington is a breathtaking place and yet Kentucky beckons her to “come home.” While Deborah tries to determine which state will win her heart, she continues her Toastmaster journey. She was a member of four clubs but finally had to choose between attending (and prepping for) all those meetings or making time to write. Deborah will be forever grateful to her many Toastmasters friends who encourage her to grow and expand her horizons. Following her dream of writing young adult fiction has been more exciting and fulfilling than she ever imagined. Deborah looks forward to sharing this adventure with all her friends and readers.

Lane This is a helpful (and ultimately up-beat) YA novel for the teenage Christian who has suffered the loss of a parent. Many grief or guidance counselors have been trained in specialties like the Muslim religion, Buddhist faith and other religious variations. How many actually know how to help a practicing Christian? Not many I'll bet; the profession seems secular to me. (I'd be happy to be corrected.)They would do well to read about our two main protagonists, one is a girl whose mother died in a car crash a few years ago and the other is her cousin, a boy whose mother has terminal cancer. It's clear that both of these adolescents attend church regularly and have attentive parents, but the main lessons here are about their grief: * Every person grieves at his or her own pace. * Every person's grief is out-pictured differently: Rage, defiance, tears, misbehavior, truancy, lack of focus, or reluctance to talk can all result from the illness and/or death of a loved one.Author Deborah D. Ferguson has had painful first-hand experience with this issue, so I respectfully grant her the authority to tell me how it works. The characters ring true (although a bit saintly), and their friends, parents and neighbors all have interesting parts to play in this drama.Ferguson also includes a teenager who is nonplussed to know his mother is pregnant. That in itself might call for a bit of counseling!I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of detail and the number of names I felt I should follow, but soon realized Ferguson would carry me along with the story so I could relax and trust her. These are nice folks with whom we can spend some time...and maybe learn something while we're at it!
