1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Errors, Poor Examples, A Few Too Many Problems to Inspire Reader-Confidence .. By Dr. E As is all too common with Wiley publishing, this text is riddled with errors, contains poorly executed graphs and figures, and is entirely overpriced (for a text lacking in proper editing/publishing). My experience with Wiley ranges from wildly specious texts (if you want to read some crazy, fringe, specious work from Wiley, try Zero Waste Engineering) to poorly supported texts (insert most all that I have ever read from Wiley publishing here). Occasionally, there is a rare gem, but when the reader finds this unpredictably great text, the instant questions are 1.) Did the author undersell his/her work? and 2.) Did he/she EVEN shop this around? Yeah, those well-supported, well-written, cleanly edited texts by Wiley are "unicorns" ... the reader is positive that they don't exist, and when he/she finds one, it seems like an impossible illusion.As a professor (whose friends and acquaintances mostly consist of professors from varying fields), we know that there are top-tier publishers and rock-bottom ones. Let's just say that most of us are not comfortable relying on or assigning Wiley's text.What inspires this mistrust/distrust, you ask? How about the loose sheet of paper you will encounter when you purchase this book ... the one that boldly states their own publishing error. Great. And, how about the endless errors, typos, blurry grey-scale photos, and sloppy figures/graphs. Now, we need to be clear, the authors seem knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They have been failed by the editor and the publishing house: the editor for not cleaning up the errors, and the publisher for not using graphs, figures, and photos that are clear, large, and helpful.Hopefully, these authors will try another publication with a new editor or a more compatible publisher. Until then, I cannot recommended this for classroom use or for personal research.

By Steve Benner As a book, "Collaborative Internet of Things (C-IoT) for Future Smart Connected Life and Business" could -- and should -- have been an enlightening, informative and inspiring read. Written by two of America's leading practical proponents of smart communications and embedded software systems, Fawzi Behmann and Kwok Wu, it has the potential to be both highly authoritative as well as realistic in its projections for future developments in a field that is set to become a hugely dominant feature of our everyday lives.Unfortunately, while it is undoubtedly comprehensive, it is also sadly anything but comprehensible in places, as well as being disorienting in the whole. This is largely due to the appalling production job undertaken by its publishers, Wiley, who seem to have done nothing to correct the vast numbers of linguistic errors made by the authors. Throughout its 265 pages, the reader is forced to wade through swathes of unintelligible grammar ("The title is carefully constructed that is depicted by the image on the front cover of the book as well as the brief text in the back cover" is an early example) and incorrect word choice (one can only assume that "exuberant cost of surgery", for example, is intended to be read as "exorbitant cost of surgery"). Oddly too, most of the diagrams intended to assist in explaining some of the authors' more complex concepts are pretty much beyond comprehension too. It does not help that these have also been poorly reproduced -- I get the impression that the authors' originals were large and in full colour and they have not reduced or converted to grey-scale gracefully. Regardless of printing problems, though, many are still either obscure in just what they are aiming to depict or else seem needlessly to be attempting to illustrate the obvious. As a consequence, gaining any insight into or understanding of the potential and likely impact of a truly Collaborative Internet of Things is most definitely an uphill struggle; the linguistic shortcomings of the text also means that realistically, the market audience for this book will be largely restricted to those who already know enough about the field for the text merely to elaborate what they already know. Hobbyists, or even students in the field, are likely to be severely hampered by its complete lack of readability. Certainly any University student using this as a textbook will have to be very careful in how they use what they glean from its pages.Given the book's exuberant, er, sorry, exorbitant price tag, I really would have expected much better of Wiley than this. What they really need to do is to pass the text to their proofing editors for a complete and proper translation of its current double Dutch into correct English. And preferably do that before the future which the authors attempt to depict actually arrives!

A solid academic foundation By Rich I worked for Microsoft (blue badge) back when we first started toying with IoT, and the progress that MS, Google, Amazon, and others are making in the field is astonishing. Wanting to keep up with the emerging Collaborative aspect (data shared), I picked up this book as a primer.For starters, this is intended as a college textbook (as the price may have given away). It's pocketed into very short components, usually 2 to 4 per page, all numbered for quick and easy reference. It starts with a smart look at how IoT can be applied across the consumer, commercial, and societal (infrastructure) levels.While I probably know quite a bit more about the subject than the average student, by halfway through I was really digging Behmann's deliberate structure and practical application. When I got to section 3.1.3.5 I was starting to get skeptical, though. That's shortly after diving into modern application of CIoT, modeling so-called Smart Home and RFID technologies. Except here's the thing: those technologies have been deployed (poorly, in my opinion) and have not delivered on the promises this book is trying to make. It reads like the optimism of four years ago, not what we currently know about consumer application of IoT going into 2016. In section 6.2.3 the author again revisits the dream of cloud-based tracking and search, which has been deployed and revoked by numerous companies, and while it still remains in many business's future plans, I deal with these businesses daily and none are clamoring to revisit it. Which isn't to say the information is wrong or useless, just viewed through the lagging lens of academia rather than the quick-moving real-world of tech.As we get to Section 3.5.1 and delve into the IoT platform architecture, the book really proves its usefulness, guiding the reader through the "how" of IoT application and spending less time speculating about dog-walking robots. This strategic implementation of CIoT can be of great benefit to CIOs or city planners, and of academic importance to students entering those fields. By 5.1.2 and the conversations around integration of SaaS, IaaS, and Paas with IoT development strategies and the emergence of collaborative services, the book is really in its sweet spot - aimed solidly at a small group of readers, but delivering dense and relevant information.While I'm not sure the average reader or individual programmers looking to capitalize on IoT will gain much from this book, I think to its intended niche audience it's a good foundation on which to build.
