Frank and to the point, should be made required reading for sexual offenders By Michot In Moral DangerSome of the books that come to mind on reading “In Moral Danger” are Margaux Fragoso’s “Tiger, Tiger’ or Nabokov’s “Lolita”. Whereas in “Lolita” the voice is that of Humbert Humbert the crime perpetrator, in In Moral Danger, Barbara Biggs is our Lolita telling her story. Like Lolita Barbara is fatherless and desperately in need of love. She will take it wherever she can, whatever the form. And because she watches too many TV shows, she confuses herself with some of her heroines.Barbara spares us nothing. She has no pity neither for her sometimes-funny-sometimes-irritating and obese prostitute mother, nor for her part-time prostitute maternal grandmother, though this latter seems to be the only glue that keeps Barbara and her five siblings from complete disintegration when they are really small. As for herself, she strips naked both literally and figuratively. Some truths are difficult to digest so it is easy to understand why, when the book came out in Australia in 2003, some found it too confronting though other victims of paedophilia inundated her mail box. It is more comfortable to have a voiceless victim that we can speak on behalf of but Barbara serves it in its crude form and does not shy from calling a spade a spade. Thank heavens she makes it easier for us by showing us the comical sides of some of the situations. In a typical example of the Stockholm Syndrome she falls in love with her forty-something barrister paedophile and at only fourteen, with a face decorated with teenagehood acne, and encouraged by the barrister, she dresses tartly because he tells her it is sophisticated. What he does not know is that she already sees herself marrying her ‘Chief’, as she calls her abuser (from the Get Smart TV show).Barbara’s childhood is chaotic: moving from house to house, starving, getting raped, shoplifting, and generally being exploited by whoever came along, especially if they smiled. Her Australia sounds beastly and vicious, whether disguised in a barrister’s wig, in intellectual jargon, a red porsche or Kings Cross louts. It is an Australia that we all hope is past and will never let its children go that unprotected. There are moments of relief though – playing with siblings and self-delusion in which dreams of becoming a star pass for reality. And moments of disbelief when has the choice of crying or laughing: Barbara hikes into a Cambodia from which everyone is literally dying to escape, marches into a hospital for her acne and steps over groaning Cambodians whose limbs or faces have been blown off.On an existential basis, one is left wondering whether humans are not worse than animals they feel superior to. At least most animals kill to survive while humans seem to have an inner need to inflict destruction or watch the other suffer. With supervision, this book could be made required reading for sex offenders as it gives a view of the victim. Maybe if Humbert Humbert had known what lasting destruction he was wrecking, he might have thought twice. On finishing In Moral Danger, one has laughed and maybe cried and felt very uncomfortable but one has an awareness of the damage society as a whole pays for these crimes. Though it does not answer why, it shows us how. And once you start reading, you can’t put it down.

A VERY POWERFUL STORY OF HURT AND HEALING By Georg Karlov This book is a 'can't put down read' I(t begins in the voice of a young girl, and as the story progresses and the main character becomes older, the voice of the narrator becomes more sophisticated. It's told in present tense, so you feel you're right there with the girl as the action takes place.Although the story is tragic in many ways, Barbara's humor keeps you laughing along with her matter-of-fact narration. There are many twists and turns in the story, you feel each one could be a book in itself. And the author tells each one as though it is just a slight stumble along the way.The honesty of this book is a testament to the courage of the author and her ability to heal from a whole series of experiences, not only sexual abuse, but emotional neglect from her family which like many victims makes her crave attention of her abuser.I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand their own or a loved one's complex emotional responses to child sexual abuse.Or, for that matter, anyone just wanting a ripper story.

I couldn't put it down! Also, as a survivor of child sexual abuse, it touched me a lot and helped me to understand and forgive myself. I too felt love for my abuser. This always made me feel ashamed and very guilty, as if I'd asked for the abuse. I didn't understand it at all. I hated myself for my positive feelings about him. Now I understand it's possible to hate what a person does to you even if you like the positive things they did too. This is one of the most important books I've read. Thank you Barbara for your amazing courage in writing so honestly about what happened to you and your candid feelings at the time.Barbara writes as if she IS that teenager girl. It feels like you're right there as it happens with her when she's 14.I see there's a sequel, The Road Home....I can't believe you left us hanging!
