How much garlic is too much? Is the Roman collar actually part of the priest's skin? Does morphine really make you invisible? These and other similarly weighty subjects are addressed in a Dave Barry manner. Follow the life of a "Pre-Boomer" growing up in a small town within a tight loving family as he humorously revisits his childhood memories and looks on the travails of growing older. Interspersed with the hilarious tales are sensitive and perceptive looks at things as different as the impact of 40 years of communism on society, to family Christmas rituals.

I have many fond memories of the family. That said...I did not expect a memoir solely devoted to growing up in Bristol. As a matter of fact, I don't think any one book could capture that as the people we met as youngsters were so unique, diverse, and many.I can appreciate the varied experiences that Larry has had both in his employment and travels. I was awed at the many people with whom Larry has interacted in his personal and professional life, and I write him to that effect. The path that he chose brought him into contact with many individuals from many walks of life.I did not get the feeling that he was "name dropping" as much as stating fact. I'm sure we all know some people of note. I don't find anything wrong with mentioning names. Heck I used to get my hair cut with the likes of Johnny Crawford and Anthony Quinn. Both, by the way, wonderful human beings with great personalities. On a personal note, I would have loved to have heard more about the twins but realize that is a personal desire.Larry's comments on life are humorous and insightful. I may not agree with all of his opinions but have to respect them and the way that they are related to the reader. I didn't get the feeling that Larry was trying to write the equivalent of War and Peace, just a reminiscence with some comments about life included.I'd recommend the book-even to someone who did not grow up in Bristol,RI. It's a good read.

Particularly enjoyable were the family stories evoking fond memories of our gatherings with seven Italian aunts and uncles, their spouses and seemingly infinite cousins. And your motor home catastrophe prompted recall of a gruesome trip from here to FL in a rented 32 footer with leaking ceiling speakers and smoking short circuited wires under the dash. Not near the trauma you suffered which almost makes me feel fortunate. The totality of your and Martha's adventures is plain awe inspiring! You both have lived at least two lifetimes worth of travel and experiences and survived apparently in great spirits. Congrats on the book! Is there another one in the future?

How he was able to make a serious hospital visit into a very funny experience made me laugh out loud. I love when he talks about morphine saying how wonderful it is and telling the reader that you can fly when you are on morphine. Writing about old age, growing up on the East Coast and other situations we've encountered made me remember stuff about my childhood I had forgotten. A truly enjoyable book.
