The editing is good and the writing is smooth. It was an easy read and before I knew it, one chapter led to two and three and so on. I didn't want to read about abuse, especially sexual abuse. The way it's handled and presented here is very tasteful, though.I can say with all honesty you fall in love with the main character and she takes you on a journey that's so honest and raw that it's hard to ignore it.And this story is about abuse, but it's a lot more than that. And the way it unfolds is a big deal. After just a few chapters, I was really rooting for the author. I saw her ups and downs and when she was down, my heart ached, and when she picked herself up, I did a cheer.That being said, I skipped all the parts about the cat. The cat's intro was great, but I wished it'd come sooner somehow because once the cat arrived, it felt like the party was already in full swing and I didn't want to leave my partners. I feel that if the cat part was either integrated better or removed entirely, then this story would be more powerful. The cat chapters were only the last few.Like with all things, this book has its good and bad. One thing that bothered me about the story was closure. Some questions went unanswered. There were four main abusers in the author's life. But while she escapes from three, we never know if those abusers ever got their comeuppances or if they were just left to roam unchecked, possibly abusing countless others, for years.The final abuser was a lot harder to untangle from, sadly and while the author made peace and found forgiveness, I couldn't. One female family member shared intimate secrets with the author at the tender age of 12. Secrets that I feel are too heavy for a child to bear. But when the author finally found the courage to confide in that person, she gets abandoned. The author doesn't see it this way, but I do. As a result, the author stopped reaching out to others for help. She internalized everything and fought long and hard in life all alone. Although that made me like her all the more, it made me angry to see her childhood fade.One thing I didn't like about this book was the way it was laid out. We see the author as a child. We see her pain, and her triumphs. We see her as a teenager, and all she overcame during that hard time. But we don't see her as a grown woman. I wanted to see her fall in love, get married, having children. I wanted to see her shed her walls of defense and start a family of her own.Those chapters about the cat, sadly, didn't highlight as much of her good years (the years when she was finally free) as I would have liked.I took a lot away from the story, though. There are choice instances that I found inspirational that made the read well worth it. I find the author's chosen path to be a very refreshing one. But I think it's okay to dislike your abusers (even if they are family), while still having love for them.If you want to take a journey back in time, then this is the book for you. Religious books aren't my preferred reading but I'm glad I read it because the life truths that the author figures out are really inspiring.

A brillant debut memoir by one of America's foremost advocates for foster youth and animal welfare By A Careful Reader This is a brilliant debut memoir by one of America's most dedicated advocates for foster youth and animal welfare. This book conveys a deep, abiding understanding of the need for spiritual growth and self-examination in the wake of struggles during foster care. It is also a fierce record of love for family and animal friends. The prose is lyrical and consistently engaging and the editing and presentation is sharp and clear. I highly recommend this book as a holiday present. We are so blessed to have Katherine Jones as an author in our midst.

The ups and downs of the system is still here today! This book touched me so deeply it made me cry. I am not alone anymore. Thank you Kathy Jones for being so open and so honest about your past. May God bless this book and may all who read it be blessed by it too!
