About the Author Richard S. MacAlpine was born in Geneva, New York, but was raised in New Jersey. He graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, and did graduate work at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. For thirty-three years, Rich taught European and American history at Oneida High School in Oneida, New York. During that time, he developed an interest in researching family history, which started his relationship with the Yates County History Center in Penn Yan back when it was widely known just as "the Oliver House." He has served on its board of directors since 2006 and has served as editor of its bimonthly publication, Yates Past, since 2008. Starting in 2004 Rich has researched and written over a hundred articles on various aspects of Yates County history. Twenty-two of those articles appear in his book, Yates County Chronicles, which was published in 2014 by The History Press. Rich & Jeanie have three adult children and nine grandchildren. Charles R. Mitchell, after a tour in the Army in Germany and graduation from Elmira College, worked at Corning Inc. for 18 years. After that he bought the Photographic Center in Penn Yan utilizing his photographic and framing skills. He began volunteering at the Oliver House Museum organizing the photo archives. This led to employment as Curator when that position became available. In the last twelve years as Curator, he has scanned and digitally enhanced over 6000 images including those in this book. He has authored three books: Keuka Lake; Penn Yan and Keuka Lake; and Hammondsport and Keuka Lake. He has co-authored seven: Glenn Curtiss; Flying High, Women in Aviation; Corning; Bath; Watkins Glen; and Finger Lake Postcards. All ten books were with Arcadia Publishing in their Images of America series. His program on Keuka Lake Steamboats has been presented to many audiences over the years.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Steamboat Era on Keuka Lake By David Wilkins Steamboats on Keuka Lake captures the excitement of a by-gone era in lake travel. Few roads existed and travel was difficult at best by horse and wagon. So steamboats were for cargo, passenger excursions, and anything else needing transportation up and down Keuka Lake. For those of us with personal connections to Keuka, this book brings to life resorts that have since faded away, and stopping points along the lake that can be visited by land and boat today. The boat speaks to the persons involved, the deals, and the battles over business and trade. I loved the book as it brought forth memories of a cherished lake and a lifestyle we can dream about, but never re-live. I hope the authors continue to search and gather more details about the history of Keuka and how we enjoy the lake today as we do. For those who just love history, you'll find the book rewarding as well.
