A must read By Nilo Fortes This is a serious book that belongs on the bookshelf of any instructor, student or researcher interested in heat and mass transfer. The original books by Prof. Mills contained a number of critical improvements over the standard heat transfer textbooks. Some of the key features included in the second edition were: complete solutions for heat conduction problems as opposed to the usual single-term graphical solutions (Heisler charts); more practical and accurate radiation charts and scaling rules by Edwards and Matovosian, as opposed to older and less accurate Hottel charts used in most textbooks; the correct use of shape factors for steady conduction between isothermal surfaces (a source of error in many older textbooks); a good discussion on extended surfaces (fins); and so on. The convection content was discussed in both practice and theory, and included a fairly large compilation of practical engineering correlations (Table 4.10 is particularly useful). The content on heat exchangers was also very complete for an undergraduate textbook, with a focus on engineering analysis and design. Also unique was the quality of the examples and problems, which ranged from simple academic exercises to complex and realistic engineering problems. The result was a very well balanced coverage of both scientific and engineering content. The third edition preserves all these good features but also includes a few nice surprises. One such addition is a more careful treatment of the lumped heat capacity Biot number (which stems from thermodynamic considerations) and its relation to the Biot number that arises from the solution of unsteady conduction problems. Another interesting addition is a more precise interpretation of Wien's displacement law, which is often used incorrectly even in specialized Radiation Heat Transfer textbooks. The short discussion on the displacement law includes relevant references for those interested in understanding the finer points of Planck's spectrum. This 3rd edition also includes revised and updated references, some small corrections and improvements throughout the text and examples, and an updated bibliography for each one of the nine chapters. I also appreciate the fact that some of the calligraphy symbols used in the book have been improved (in my opinion) with respect to the previous editions (first edition by Irwin/McGraw-Hill, second edition by Prentice-Hall). I find the number of typos to be pretty small in the first print, especially for a book of this size and complexity that appears to have been re-typeset from scratch. Quality of illustrations and artwork is good. I would have used larger, darker fonts in some of the illustrations, but the overall layout and artwork is pleasant. The hardcover binding appears to be of very good quality, which is critical in a book with more than 1000 pages. All in all, a very complete textbook for beginners interested in learning, but that is also valuable to seasoned engineers in need of a technically solid, up-to-date manual in the topic. Highly recommended.
