Review onlinebookclub.org ReviewThe Untold Unlocking of Secrets is a slap in the face that has you holding your breath waiting for the next awful life lesson to befall an eight-year-old Haitian boy. If it were a movie you'd be looking through spread fingers with that little voice in the back of your head screaming, 'no, you can't do that!' But you can't truly lookaway because you might miss what happens next. It is a piece that will keep you hooked until the very end, even if it means sitting on the edge of your seat with your hands over your eyes. Jean-Pierre's non-fiction piece has you questioning the importance of the life lessons that only a parent can teach you and how terribly things can go wrong when a child is left in the dark. We follow young James' battle through life's obstacles as he desperately tries to keep his head above water and navigate the transition from boy to man in the most unconventional and sickening way imaginable. It is a story of experimentation, curiosity and poor choices with a skewed view on reality that only a child can possess. Like James, you are left feeling as though important information hasn't been passed onto you throughout the narrative. As the narrative skips from life event to life event across a span of several years, the reader is left trying to piece together the moments in order to determine the direction of the story. It reads more as a confessional piece rather than based on a concept driven storyline. This is not necessarily a bad point; the unfolding events do keep you enthralled. But the central point of depression is lost throughout the majority of the piece. Each section provides enough shock value to keep the reader intrigued but the finer details are lacking. With no insight into the Haitian culture, the reader is left questioning why the young boy does the things that he does. It is clear the author intends culture and upbringing to be of consequence but without that insider knowledge of the Haitian culture the reader is merely left flabbergasted by the unfolding events. Regardless, this is an intriguing and thought provoking piece that leaves you wanting to know more. Animal lovers beware, this piece is not for the fainthearted but I'm going to recommend it as a must read anyway. I give The Untold Unlocking of Secrets a 3 out of 4 stars for its uncandid honesty.
From the Author With memoirs some readers are unable to fully enjoy the read because they feel bad. The Untold was hard to put into words and writing it brought a lot of emotions/memories I wished died a long time ago, but The Untold was written for a reason; to be enjoyed by the reader. To laugh at the any misfortunes that sound funny and be weirded out. Enjoy the book as it should be enjoyed and if you feel there are any details that were missed, they will all be addressed in book two. The Untold was written this way for a reason. The ending of the book is intentional, because this is book one of two. There are no reasons to leave anyone in a loop.

By Kathleen Pooler Untold Secrets is gripping story of a young man’s coming-of-age at a very early age in his native Haiti. The topics of childhood abandonment, sexual addiction and suicidal thoughts are addressed. The author does an excellent job of pulling the reader into his story through the voice of his younger self. The reality of his life is raw and difficult to face. His writing is clear and engaging and I definitely got the picture of what his coming-of-age was like. The cultural aspects were very interesting and added to the intrigue of the story.As a reader I had some difficulty with the repetitive sexually explicit details and felt there should have been warning about that. In his defense, I do think he wanted to tell his story as authentically as possible and in that vein, he did accomplish this authenticity.The main issue I had related to his story structure. I believe a memoir has to show redemption and leave the reader with a sense of satisfaction that the hero has overcome the obstacles. While he paints a very vivid picture of the obstacles, the ending fell flat and abruptly for me. I knew he had survived but I wanted to know a little more about that experience.This story is important in shedding light on the impact of childhood abandonment. I have to give it 3-stars due to multiple typos and what I felt as a reader to have an incomplete narrative arc. However, I would read other works by this author as I feel he possesses the ability to engage his reader and makes them want to know more.

I did enjoy the read, and I would read more from this author. I'd like to see the author hone his skills and would have liked more about the Haitian culture as a background.

Intense, Raw and Deeply Moving By Milliardaire Syverain The Untold Unlocking of Secrets is an intense coming of age memoir, clearly told, raw and deeply moving. What the author needs in this book is time. Time to look back and reflect about what he had lived and some distance from everything he went through. Time will afford the author for a deeper healing which is what memoir is all about. My congratulations to James Jean-Pierre for his first memoir, while I am pleading with him to continue writing and perhaps gifting the public with another memoir when he turns thirty.
