The De Havilland Comet and Tupolev Tu-104 were the first to fly revenue services, but the airline industry did not change significantly until the Boeing 707, DC-8 and Convair 880 appeared. Suddenly hundreds of glorious propellor driven airliners became obsolete and all the world's airlines rushed to buy the new jet engine technology. Watching the water injection-assisted take-off of one of the early Boeing 707s and DC-8s was an awesome spectacle, with smoke pouring from the turbojets and bomber-like noise. Sadly this era is long gone, and the classic American jetliners that were once so common at airports all over the world are now a distant memory. The author has represented all three of the classic American jetliners in this all 115 page colour photo book, with fabulous and unique colour photos taken mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, as these great airliners were nearing the end of their service lives. The ebook is a great look back at the twilight era of classic jet airliners, and you can conveniently carry it along on your ipad or mobile device for reading enjoyment at home or while on the road travelling.

If you love the DC-8, 707, and 880, then you will be pleased, but y ou might be disappointed to discover that most of the photographs are from the 1980s and 1990s, during the twilight of these airliners when they mostly carried freight. There are very few aircraft in the liveries of their original owners/operators. The text itself of the book (neither the photos nor the photo captions) is rather sketchy, with only one page per plane, and the data tables for various variants (given in the back of the book) is in the metric system only.

After all, this is one book dealing with 3 different types of airliners. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret my purchase, and I would buy it again, but it isn't exactly what I had hoped for. The section on the Convair airliners was very short, but maybe that is to be expected since there not not many of that type made. Overall a good book, but not one of the best.
