In a complicated, busy world, do you feel overwhelmed and insignificant? The heartfelt stories in this collection will take you to a quiet place and remind you that simple acts of love can make a lifetime of difference. “I love this collection of stories and poems told by great Canadians; stories of real people that transcend the ages. Many of these stories felt like they were a leaf from my own life book. You will find this reading hilarious, therapeutic and inspirational. A must-read for all book lovers.” —Randall W. Young, Manager, Artists Relationships, World Vision Canada You'll be amused, encouraged, and inspired to reflect on ways you’ve been shown love, and to consider how you might show more love in the future. The men, women, and children in these stories experienced love in ways they’d never have thought of, from people they might not normally have noticed, and in surprising places:
- on the wrong side of the tracks in small-town Ontario
- beside a wood burning stove in the Central African Republic
- in the words of an old letter in a New Brunswick house
- next to a burned-out Saskatchewan farmhouse
- upon a deserted country road in British Columbia
- in front of a chopped-down jackfruit tree in the Philippines
- over a table in an empty Alberta restaurant
- at a bus stop in a Quebec city
- from the bombed-out ruins of a house in the Netherlands

Review Uplifting, heart-warming, and invigorating. Life―real life! Precious, diverse, thought-provoking, worth every minute of it. A pure jewel!” ―Claire de Burbure, MD, PhD, Medical & Environmental Health Teacher “There is a line in a Joni Mitchell song that says, ‘the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses.’ That’s how I felt reading this book. These are tender stories of joy and sorrow, raw and poignant reminders of all that it means to be alive.” ―Ali Matthews, singer-songwriter “There were contributors with backgrounds from Africa to Europe to the Philippines, from Atlantic Canada to British Columbia to Attawapiskat. It was not long before I was drawn into experiencing the expression of God’s grace through challenges of autism, adoption, or abuse; the joys of forgiveness and friendship; and even the setting of priorities with ice cream bars. Some pieces tugged at my heartstrings, others encouraged and some made me smile, even chuckle aloud―thank you Champ! I was reminded that, no matter our background or circumstance, our struggles and victories are universal and we need one another. This is a book to share with a cup of hot apple cider and cinnamon, but it’s also good with a glass of cold lemonade." ―Dawn Loucks, member, Bayview Glen Church “I commend these delightful, heartfelt stories from fellow Canadian authors. They are worth your time to read. The Hot Apple Cider series is a great Canadian treasure.” ―The Rev. Dr. Ed Hird, author of Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit

Hot Apple Cider with Cinnamon Stories of Finding Love in Unexpected Places N By Donna Hirtle Hot Apple Cider with CinnamonStories of Finding Love in Unexpected PlacesN. J Lindquist, editor of Hot Apple Cider with Cinnamon, Stories of Finding Love in Unexpected Places, has brought home the cosy in the next in the “Hot Apple Cider” series. Will this be the Canadian equivalent to the long-running “Chicken Soup for the Soul?” Not unlike the Chicken series, Lindquist has orchestrated a collection of non-fiction shorts, interlaced with poems and short fictional gems of an encouraging and inspiring nature. The fiction and nonfiction alike hold universal truths so close to the heart they hug and challenge with graceful realism.Keen to crack the spine to the author from our wee town, I bounded through Glynis M. Belec’s “Old Ladies’ Perfume.” The power of sensory memory enthralled me with my own recollection of special women—“oldies”—who daubed behind the ears, dating themselves while endearing mentorship. Smiles indeed!Hooked, I kept turning the pages rather than trusting the editor’s wisdom. Considering it an anthology rather than a rivulet of emotional roll, I proceeded to the end of the book only to return and finish out of order. My loss. Reading front to back Lindquist choreographed her wordsmiths for good reason. The “Other First Prize,” by Martin Smith, bolted from the starting gate, appealing to our inner child with laughter and the foibles of youth. The reader can almost mature along with the cumulative wisdom of healthy relationships such as L. June Stevenson’s “The Girl from the Other Side of the Tracks,” a bending of parental rules for the sake of friendship. Or Ramona Furst’s, “An Extraordinary Visit,” a powerful international wonder of God linking long lost friends, in a way only His timing can orchestrate.Read in order Belec’s coming-of-age giggle, spooned nicely into “Notes from a Sacred Journey,” about losing a loved one prematurely. Bill Bonikowsky penned of a greater love to hold onto through life’s storms. Bonikowsky wrote, “I can talk to her if it helps me. But she is hearing other voices now, including The Voice of her King, who exchanged a throne for the manger.”Timeless truths in Doris Fleming’s tribute poem, “Thanks, Dad!” or “Learning to Love by Letting Go,” by Lisa Elliott, give hints and pocket treasures that remind the reader about loving in the spots that death leads. Not to be left in these places of reflective, the editor turned us to “A Second Chance,” by Frieda Martens—oh, to live that teacher’s wisdom! Again, Rob Horseman’s “Carlos,” got me to blink a happy tear, or two, because a teacher dared to challenge with tough love.Indeed, Lindquist stirred the Hot Apple Cider with spice. Cinnamon, a favorite flavor laced in comfort foods, for this reader, will now be associated with a stronger understanding of everyday love.Donna HirtleNovember 27, 2015

A Wonderful Collection of Positive and Comforting Fiction and Non-Fiction By Eddie Chu This book warms my heart and mind.Consisting of over forty fictional and non-fictional—mainly the latter—short stories and poems, this book conveys love, hope, and humour. It leads with a hearty laugh and ends with encouraging hope. In between are dozens of treats that include true life experiences, poems, short fictional stories, and glimpses into Canadian history.I downloaded this to my Kindle reader and opened it up on my smart phone or tablet whenever I had a moment. My favourite time was to read one or two entries in bed before going to sleep with a taste of something positive and comforting. I especially like the non-fictional stories that give glimpses into Canadian history and the real life accounts about faith, hope, and love. The variety of entries is wonderful but the common effect is, indeed, like a cup of hot apple cider on a cold day.

Apple Cider Served with Love By Mary Hosmar This fourth installment of the Hot Apple Cider short story and poetry anthology focusses on love and contains at least one story or poem to touch every reader. From the humorous “The Other First Prize” by Martin Smith, to the poignant “Here Mommy, This is for You” by Ruth Warren, to the heart-rending “A Baby Named Hope” by Carmen Witmeier the theme of love is brought out: love for each other, love for the downtrodden, love for the marginalized and love for, and especially from, God.The majority of the stories are non-fiction giving us a glimpse into the authors’ lives, joys and heartaches. The fictional stories are very believable and could happen to any reader. All give one pause to consider and think. As with the other books in the series, the authors are all Canadian and Christian. Their belief and world-view come out strongly. One does not, however, have to be Christian to be touched by the stories.Since each of the authors contributing to this anthology is a unique individual, so the writing styles are unique and individual. Some may better resonate with the reader than others, but all have been professionally written and edited.I received this book in order to give an honest review.
