"Nigger" is arguably the most divisive word in the history of the English language. But it is not just history, the word is very much alive today. Some say that it no longer serves its original purpose and, over the last 50 years, African Americans have commandeered the word and given it new meaning. This book analyzes that claim by surveying the different perspectives taken by black, cultural leaders in the past, as well as the process by which Hip Hop culture embraced the term. Readers will find a fresh new perspective on an old debate, but a debate that is still, very much, worth having.

By saramarie This is a fantastic book and an even better resource for anyone immersed or invested in hip-hop culture. As a long term fan of The Crossmovent and Brady's (aka Phanatik) work I've been impressed and encouraged with his literature. His latest book, "Navigating the 'N' Word," takes the reader into some choppy and even uncomfortable waters. But Brady proves to be a wise and able guide for the journey. A thoughtful reader, regardless of their race, will find this book to be a feast for the mind and the soul. His historical and sociological research are thorough and very informative. I especially like how he charts the inception, acceptance, and eventual proliferation of the "N" word throughout rap music. Furthermore he provides the tri-fold ways in which the word is used throughout music, movies, and culture (the "expendable n___," the "dependable n____," and the "exceptional n___"). His explanation and reasoning leads the reader to believe that this word needs to be expunged from the English language as opposed to simply being redeemed somehow.I believe this book would be an incredible and valuable resource for any educators, pastors, lay ministers, or youth workers that are laboring in our cities. In fact, I would go so far as to call it a "must read."Brady Goodwin does a good job historically of explaining how rap music and Blaxploitation films were instrumental in unleashing the "N" and "B" word into everyday vernacular - primarily for African Americans. He also documents how the church was largely silent to provide an alternative voice because of its long and historic disdain for rap music and rap culture. As rap gained the ears of the streets the majority of the church chose to reject the music and culture entirely rather than seeing it as a medium for evangelism, discipleship, and cultural criticism. Instead of providing the youth culture with an alternative voice, the church largely left the youth to be swept up by the provocative and influential voices of the music and media culture. This silence has contributed to the casualties in our culture. As he did in his other fantastic work, "The Death of Hip-Hop, Marriage, and Morals," he does a excellent job in unpacking Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how it correlates to peoples' perception and usage of the "N" and "B" words. He offers an inverted hierarchy as a suggested means of helping people understand the destructive power of these words. He states that people need to understand their metaphysical realities of being "made in God's image" first before they pursue seeking their basic needs at all costs. He unpacks all of this effectively and in great detail.Altogether it's a great read! I digested it with great enthusiasm and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend it.

Everyone should read this book By Blind Beggar This is the first book of Brady's I have read, and now I am placing his other works on my reading list. I feel I must disclose that he is a former classmate of mine, though that is not why I recommend the book. I did not grow up going to church, but I did grow up in rural NJ where my entire experience was one of white culture. In a graduating class of over 200, I believe I could count the number of African Americans on one hand. I knew of racism and had a few relatives that seemed to use language that made me uncomfortable, but I personally never felt animosity towards anyone of a different culture. I ended up teaching in Baltimore for a short time, and that was a culture shock for me. I felt very naïve in seeing the interracial dynamics at play, and I did not know how to navigate them. I knew of people who had animosity towards me just because I was white and I really did not understand why. I still need to wrestle with many things Brady brings up in this book, and I still don't know what to do with the feeling of being lumped in with others and those who have gone before me. This book, while uncomfortably explicit for some, gives a good introduction in many of the surrounding issues, both historically and present-day, that go into this discussion. Sometimes, I feel like if I say anything, I would be dismissed with "you just don't get it." Maybe that's true, but it doesn't help conversation just to write me off, either. Thank you Brady, for giving a good, short introduction to the issues we all need to be familiar with. I have already purchased extra copies to give to others ...

Then I appreciated it alot more. Once I read the books he started writing, I'm such a fan! This topic can be a rocky one to navigate, since the word is SO entrenched into the culture, yet Brady touched on this topic so skillfully and graciously. He has a knack for tying history and sociology together to show trends and the deeper reasons for the way things go. Never saw the similarities between Blacksploitation films and mainstream Hip Hop, as well as never knew that blacks tried to use the word n**ger in a positive way in the past!Even if you stubbornly want to hold on to this word, this book will force you to think and ponder on its conclusion. God bless Brady for his impact in the culture, which started in Cross Movement, and continues today!
