Quick Reference or Investigative Resource - You can Do Both By Steven Brock Biometrics, the ability to analyze biological systems with emerging technology, is one of the fastest growing sectors of technological innovation and application. There seemsto be a new way to apply it every day - from facial recognition to finger scanning to occular recognition. Usage is expanding from security to point-of-service. A recent survey of cell-phone users concluded that biometric devices and software make them feel more secure about their personal data. The "Encyclopedia of Biometrics" is the foremost reference for anyone needing information on the subject. Arranged alphabetically by topic (such as Ear Biometrics or Wavefront Coded Iris Biometric Systems), each entry, written by a specialist in the field, contains a list of synonyms, a definition, a detailed description, a summary, and a list of related topics. With any emerging technology, there are attempts to weaken it through circumvention or direct attack, called spoofing. Of great value in "The Encyclopedia of Biometrics" are sections on Anti-Spoofing Methodologies, such as those to combat the use of printed or hand-painted contact lenses to get past iris-recognition devices. Though spoofing is in its infancy, the section authors note that there is much work being done to keep up with the sophistication of the attacks. This outstanding volume serves not only as a quick reference for a quick definition or explanation of a concept, but also as a guide to deeper investigations into new ways of applying computer technologies to biomedicine.
