The characters are really easy to get to know and you kind of become part of their family. her vivid descriptions of all the characters make them come alive. anyone who's ever been abused knows that it's a hard thing to come out of and she doea a very good job at expressing this with Kolby. the only question I really have is when are you coming out with a second one?

It is very intelligently and humorously written, and the author skillfully paints a vivid picture of her story, allowing the reader to identify with much of what Kolby is experiencing. This is a wonderful read. Highly recommended.

In the first three volumes of this series, Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young challenge theories about patriarchy that ideological forms of feminism have promoted. In this volume, they argue that we must replace those misandric theories with one that takes seriously the needs and problems of boys and men no less than those of girls and women; at the same time, they add, we must maintain the reforms that egalitarian forms of feminism have promoted. With both factors in mind, they trace the history of men – that is, culturally organized perceptions of the male body and its masculine functions – over the past ten thousand years. They show how these perceptions have evolved in connection with a series of technological and cultural revolutions: horticultural, agricultural, industrial, military, and now reproductive. This new approach sets the stage for understanding a profound and growing problem that our society must face: the increasing inability of boys and men to create or sustain a healthy collective identity. The authors define this as an identity that is distinctive, necessary, and therefore publicly valued. Without a healthy and positive identity, two current trends will continue: giving up (dropping out of school, society, or even life itself) and attacking a society that has no room for men specifically as men, believing that even a negative identity, acted out in antisocial ways, is better than none at all.

Review “This is a brilliant advance, a tour de force. There is nothing quite like it in terms of historical sweep and analytical depth, and all imbued with humanism. Nathanson and Young have pioneered in identifying and naming a dangerous cultural trend that thre"Written in engaging and readable prose and built on a rich multidisciplinary source base, this work will appeal to a wide audience, most especially to those with interests in history, gender studies, and cultural anthropology. By Hu(man) With three hefty, important volumes of data and analysis preceding it, the fourth of five volumes in the series on misandry by Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young has been published by McGill-Queens University Press. This is in a sense more important that the previous volumes, which document the dissemination of misandry (contempt for men) by the media, the supporting of misandry in legislation and the courts, and a volume on misandry and world religions. It will be completed with a volume on transcending misandry and misogyny which will argue for the essential need for intersexual dialogue at a time when divisiveness between men and women (and any other human designation in between) has become destructive popular pastime. REPLACING MISANDRY is a clear exposition of the several stages in the historical record of the male body and its place in culture. I predict that it will be a basic textbook in Gender Studies courses. There has been nothing like it to date insofar as it takes into consideration the meaning of masculinity and manhood from a broadly humanistic perspective. REPLACING MISANDRY will be reviewed at length in an upcoming issue of NEW MALE STUDIES: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL.

It is an unblinking, informative look at how relations between the sexes got to their current state--both historically and in our currently "correct" sociopolitical atmosphere. If you haven't, get this one and let it lead you to their others, beginning with Spreading Misandry. it is time for the insanity to stop, and the authors are a powerful voice for hope.

Quick Reference or Investigative Resource - You can Do Both By Steven Brock Biometrics, the ability to analyze biological systems with emerging technology, is one of the fastest growing sectors of technological innovation and application. There seemsto be a new way to apply it every day - from facial recognition to finger scanning to occular recognition. Usage is expanding from security to point-of-service. A recent survey of cell-phone users concluded that biometric devices and software make them feel more secure about their personal data. The "Encyclopedia of Biometrics" is the foremost reference for anyone needing information on the subject. Arranged alphabetically by topic (such as Ear Biometrics or Wavefront Coded Iris Biometric Systems), each entry, written by a specialist in the field, contains a list of synonyms, a definition, a detailed description, a summary, and a list of related topics. With any emerging technology, there are attempts to weaken it through circumvention or direct attack, called spoofing. Of great value in "The Encyclopedia of Biometrics" are sections on Anti-Spoofing Methodologies, such as those to combat the use of printed or hand-painted contact lenses to get past iris-recognition devices. Though spoofing is in its infancy, the section authors note that there is much work being done to keep up with the sophistication of the attacks. This outstanding volume serves not only as a quick reference for a quick definition or explanation of a concept, but also as a guide to deeper investigations into new ways of applying computer technologies to biomedicine.

From the Author      Over the centuries, men of character have lived by a set of principles and standards that have guided their lives. These were men of honor and esteem. They took their honor and their principles seriously and lived life as men, not merely adult males, but true men - men of character, integrity and honor.        But, in today's modern society, it seems that the vast majority of men have forgotten how to live by these principles. They have forgotten what it means to truly be real men. They have forgotten the ways of honor.        Gone are the days where boys and young men could find good role models in movies, on television, or elsewhere in their lives. The majority of young men today have no manly role models. Oh, there are those role models in movies, but they aren't really the role models that you want for your sons.        They teach them to either act brutish and crude, or feminine and wimpish. Where are the role models like John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart? Where do boys and young men learn to be men of honor in today's world? What has happened to the men in our world, that they no longer have pride in being men of respect, men of courage, and men of honor?        What happened to the days when a man's word meant something, when a handshake was as good as a contract? What happened to respect, honor, and chivalry? Do you think that our modern society is producing any more men like Thomas Jefferson or George Washington? What has happened to men of courage, men who were willing to stand against wrong wherever they might find it?        These are not simply rhetorical questions; there is a very real risk of losing an entire generation to political correctness, to the unbridled influence of Hollywood, and to selfish neglect. We need men of honor, men of the code, to step up and take responsibility for both living life as they should, and for teaching the next generation of young men how to be men of character and honor. We need to stand against the wave of neglected standards in this world.        Men use to live by principles like courage, respect, honor, and integrity, but these traits don't seem to get a second thought in today's world. There is very little self-respect left today; self-respect has been replaced with a counterfeit replacement. Today, men dress and act like boys; they seem to not want to grow up and become men. Thus, boys and young men have no role models to look up to; so they turn to celebrities, sports figures, and musicians as their role models.        This decline in values and principles can be seen across the board. It is evident in the music lyrics, the foul language which has now become common place, pants that hang below the butt, and an overall attitude of disrespect that permeates throughout our culture. F-bombs are now as common as saying hello, and are heard in music, on movies, on television, in mixed company, and just as often by women as much as men.        Respect and honor have fallen by the wayside. Standards have been lowered to the lowest common denominator. The good news is that not everyone has lowered their standards, not everyone has accepted this decline in our culture. There are still men out there who know what it really means to be real men.        It is high time for men to get back to being men of honor. Men of the Code is a guide to living life as a superior man, a man of honor. In Men of the Code, you will learn what has happened to our culture that has led to this erosion of morals and honor among both men and women. I delve into how our entertainment, schools, and government have played a major role in the lowering of the standards of our modern culture, and how we are losing an entire generation of young men to these "new standards," or more fittingly, the new lack of standards.        I also take the reader on a journey through the character traits that all men should integrate into their lives. These character traits are universal. Men throughout the world recognize the value of being honorable, of being honest, courageous, and having integrity. The traits that are covered in Men of the Code, are traits which everyone should live by, but unfortunately, very few actually do.        Everyone should know what they stand for and what they won't stand for in life, but most people in today's society never slow down enough to even consider what they truly stand for. Men of the Code takes the reader step by step into the world of the real man - the man who lives life with gusto, courage, honor, character, and integrity. It guides the reader through the character traits, roles and duties of men who live a life of honor and character.        Men of the Code should be read more like a guide book for the man who wants to live by the old ways of honor, in a modern world that has largely forgotten what honor truly means. Not everyone has accepted the lower standards that have gradually slithered into acceptance in today's world. There are still men in this world who live by a code of honor.      What each man has to decide is how he wants to live his life. This is a vital question for you, and every man, to answer. Do you want to simply go along to get along, or do you want to go you own way in a society of sheep? Do you want to be an average man or do you have the courage to step up and be a superior man - a man of honor and courage? I hope that you decide to be a superior man.        I use the symbol of a man holding a samurai sword on the cover because the sword symbolizes power, protection, authority, strength, courage, and is the symbol of knighthood and chivalry. It also symbolizes discrimination and the power of manly intellect. These are all traits of men of the code, and traits which have all but vanished in our modern culture.        It is my goal to give men a guide for living a life of honor, for living by a code. Men of the Code is a guide for doing just this. Many look to the bible and yes it is the guide of finding ones spiritual self. But in this world of corruption, greed, and power it is easy to get lost. There is only two choices. One can conform to the world and be a puppet, or one can find his own set of values and live by a code. After much search in my life I finally read the ultimate guide book that transformed me and confirmed my values. The book is entitles, "Men of the Code." It is a must read for a boy who has lost his way, for a man who does not want to conform to the world, or even for one who has a set code and values and wants to confirm them or gain a better understanding of them-self. As for me, myself, who is a man of character, a man who has spent half his life serving in the Navy, a man who has fought in five conflicts, a man who is a combat veteran, and a martial artist. This book was a reflection of my own life, of what I have overcome, of the trials I went through, the path that I have walked, and the journey I still have to strive through. This book is my guide to keep me striving and on the right path. "Men of the Code" is a must read.

My first introduction was the work of Robert Bly and the mythopoetic approach he wrote about. Now Dr. Sanders takes "men's work" to a new and higher lever. That level is to resurrect the honor and code of men that through the past 3 decades seemed to be lost in a world often confused with political correctness. Dr. Sanders addresses the honor and the code of men which also enriches how men relate to their world, their partners and their own personal discipline which therefore enriches life itself. Men of the Code is about personal integrity, value and ethics, all the things that have seemed to go by the way side. To bring this Code back is to resurrect the true character of man that has been forgotten.Ken Ducote, MA, NCC, LPC

For decades the North Korean regime has preached a virulent race-nationalism to its own people. At the same time, however, it has succeeded in making outsiders believe that it is guided by a solipsistic, inward-directed ideology of self-reliant communism. This in turn has nurtured the wishful assumption that the regime no longer has serious designs on South Korea. In this book, his follow-up to The Cleanest Race (2009), B.R. Myers shows that although the myth of Juche has done great service for the regime at home and abroad, the ideology’s content has never played a significant role in policy-making or domestic propaganda. The North Korean nuclear program must be grasped in the context of the regime’s true ideological commitment, which is not to self-reliance, but to “final victory” over the rival state. The book's appendix contains an English translation of the oldest extant version (from 1960) of Kim Il Sung's so-called Juche speech of 1955; this as an effort to discourage the prevailing academic practice of relying on more recent, "emboldened" versions instead. Press Reaction: "Makes a compelling case for its own interpretation of Juche .... should draw attention back to Myers’ contrarian arguments about the nature of the North Korean regime, which deserve to be taken seriously by anyone interested in the DPRK." - Columbia Political Review "Relying for the most part on Korean language sources, Myers makes a convincing case that what the DPRK has boasted for decades to international audiences as its unique guiding ideology of self-reliance is actually a sham doctrine, bearing no relevance to the actual policies of the DPRK, either domestically or internationally.... A detailed dissection of philosophical, political and historical documentation.... The whole book is rich with citation and influences from psychology, the history of ideas, political history and literature.... [Myers'] criticism of Bruce Cumings, among others, has earned him vitriolic criticism in return. However, most of the time the remarks are aimed at what others perceive to be Myers’ views of North Korea, rather than at the argument he makes, based on his knowledge of the language and the primary sources that indeed corroborate most of his thesis." - Gianluca Spezza, NK News, October 2015

North Korea's Juche Myth, by B. R. Myers

About the Author B.R. Myers was born in the US and educated in Bermuda, South Africa and Germany, where he received a Korean Studies Ph.D. with a thesis on North Korean literature. He now specializes in the research of North Korea's ideology and propaganda, subjects on which he has written for peer-reviewed academic journals in the US, Canada and South Korea, as well as for the New York Times, Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal. His book Han Sorya and North Korean Literature: The Failure of Socialist Realism in the DPRK (Cornell East Asia Series, 1994) was the first English-language academic book on North Korean cultural history. He is also known for “A Reader’s Manifesto” and other essays on literature and animal rights in The Atlantic. His book The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why It Matters (2009) was praised by Christopher Hitchens as "finely argued and brilliantly written," and by South Korea's Yonhap News Agency as "perhaps the most significant work on [North Korea] since Kim Jong Il came to power." It has since been published in French, Chinese, Korean, Czech and Polish versions. Myers teaches in the international studies department at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea.

This book seeks to chart the history of a concept, ‘Juche’, as it is often rendered, untranslated in English. He demonstrates how the word has come to play an outsized role in how North Korea is understood by some sections of the academic and policy community. His conclusions are stark: Juche is a largely meaningless concept, devoid of real content, designed mainly to make the leadership look good on the world stage and achieve various foreign policy aims.On the face of it, this is a boring if important project, but Myers is very gifted writer, and his extensive and thorough use of Korean language sources make for a fascinating and often gripping read. Ironically, as a fellow Korean speaker, student of North Korea and reader of North Korean sources, I can attest to the fact that this is no easy task: North Korean sources of the kind that Myers cites are extremely repetitive and dull, and such thorough going research would surely have required countless and largely thankless hours of work.He is often searing in his criticism of those who have taken North Korean ideological grandstanding seriously, and this makes for refreshing and interesting reading. He is also not afraid to take on the claims of those who he broadly agrees with and admires when he disagrees with them. In the main, at least so far as this reviewer is concerned, he is basically fair, though sometimes one gets the feeling that he takes old claims and misguided remarks sometimes just made in passing a bit too seriously. Nonetheless, his directness and frankness in this regard makes the book all the more compelling.Understandably, Myers’s combative, clear and frank approach to the issues he writes has made him both accessible to the general reader and controversial in the academy. But another reviewer who claims that Myers does not publish in academic journals is spreading falsehoods, just check Google Scholar or Wikipedia for the references.

Myers takes aim at the intellectual consistency of North Korea's official ideology, its history and progression from the 1960's to the present. Myers makes the argument that Juche is a sham doctrine whose value is only to impress people by its presence, rather than by its contents. Consequently, the real ideology of North Korea, at least since the early 1990's is that of a military-first state not too dissimilar from Imperial Japan or the fascistic regimes in Europe. To be clear, this book is a work of intellectual history, but I think it is a demonstration of skill that Myers can pen a book about the writings of an ideology as notoriously dry and boring as Juche Thought, and do so in a way that is not only expansive in its scope, but very accessible in its readability. If you have read his 2010 book "The Cleanest Race", and have an interest in North Korea, then you will enjoy and benefit from this book.

While I agree with much that is written here, I did not write it myself:Contrary to a certain esteemed co-reviewer, I hold the (admittedly somewhat eccentric) view that a customer review should provide information primarily about the reviewed book, rather than the author’s other publications, the author’s educational background, the institutional structure of the publishing house, or the author’s competitors. In accordance with this principle, I would define the type of this book as a scholarly monograph solidly based on extensive empirical research but written in a markedly polemical style. As such, North Korea’s Juche Myth partly reproduces certain common patterns of North Korean studies but also provides some refreshingly new perspective. Determined to refute some specific views (which are popularly labeled as “revisionist”), the author created more an anti-antithesis than a neutral synthesis. In this one particular respect, the book’s approach has much in common with the “revisionist” publications it criticizes, because some of the latter (such as North Korea: Another Country by Bruce Cumings) were also strongly focused on refuting certain specific views about North Korea. Judging from an earlier customer review, it can also be predicted with reasonable certainty that the polemical aspects of Myers’ book will give a further push to the good old hamster wheel, the dialectic of thesis-antithesis-anti-antithesis.Nevertheless, the novelty of the factual information provided by North Korea’s Juche Myth certainly deserves attention even if one may not agree with the author’s polemical approach. Having examined a wide range of primary sources (such as North Korean press articles, Kim Il Sung interviews, and the declassified reports of Soviet bloc diplomats), nearly all relevant scholarly monographs, and even a bit of oral history, Myers painstakingly tracked down and documented the evolution of North Korea’s chuch’e sasang, from the mid-1950s to the present. Actually, the very recognition of this evolution is a major contribution to scholarship, because – thanks to the diligent efforts of North Korean propaganda – it is often assumed that the birth of chuch’e sasang in December 1955 (or even earlier) was akin to that of Pallas Athena (who emerged fully armed and battle ready from Zeus’ head).Myers convincingly demonstrates, among others, that (1) the term chuch’e sasang originally meant “subject thought” (rather than “self-reliance” or “subjectivism”), and it can be philologically traced back to the Japanese translation of the German philosophical word Subjekt; (2) the term was in use not only in North Korea but also in Park Chung Hee’s South Korea; (3) Kim Il Sung was hardly the sole or principal creator of chuch’e sasang, for Kim Ch’ang Man and others played a more decisive role in the formulation of the concept; (4) the extensive use of chuch’e sasang in North Korean propaganda started only in the early 1960s, and it still took considerable additional time to place it into the center of the regime’s formal ideology; and (5) the North Korean leadership preferred to keep chuch’e sasang in a state of deliberate vagueness, instead of creating a coherent system of abstract ideas that may be reinterpreted, creatively applied to different conditions, and distinguished from the personal deeds of its founder. The view that the regime’s chuch’e propaganda was a mere smokescreen aimed at alleviating both Soviet and South Korean suspicions seems to be overstated, because the Soviet bloc diplomats invariably regarded chuch’e sasang as an implicitly hostile concept that rejected the principle of supranational socialist integration. Still, it is correct to say (as Myers does) that chuch’e sasang (as a philosophy distinguished from nationalism and Communism) served mainly external propaganda aims, and it did not provide a driving force to actual North Korean policies. In fact, the considerable tactical flexibility of the North Korean leadership indicates that not only chuch’e sasang but even ethnic nationalism (which Myers considers the real driving force of the DPRK) was used by the regime in an opportunistic and manipulative way.In my opinion, these factual elements of the book are sufficiently valuable to render North Korea’s Juche Myth an important contribution to North Korean studies, all the more so because it is fairly compatible with, say, Dae-Sook Suh’s Kim Il Sung (though admittedly not with Han S. Park’s North Korea). If the book is to be criticized, the criticism should be aimed at refuting the author’s observations, arguments, and conclusions one by one, rather than summarily dismissing the book on the basis of the author’s academic background, his publisher, and other ad hominem issues. “Brûler n’est pas répondre,” Camille Desmoulins said.

When she started working with the aged more than forty years ago, Ann Burack-Weiss began storing the knowledge and skills she thought would help when she got old herself. It was not until she hit her mid-seventies that she realized she had packed sneakers to climb Mount Everest, not anticipating the crevices and chasms that constitute the rocky terrain of old age. The professional gerontological and social work literature offered little help, so she turned to the late-life works of beloved women authors who had bravely climbed the mountain and sent back news from the summit. Maya Angelou, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, Joan Didion, Marguerite Duras, M. F. K. Fisher, Doris Lessing, Mary Oliver, Adrienne Rich, May Sarton, and Florida Scott-Maxwell were among the many guides she turned to for inspiration.

In The Lioness in Winter, Burack-Weiss blends an analysis of key writings from these and other famed women authors with her own wisdom to create an essential companion for older women and those who care for them. She fearlessly examines issues such as living with loss, finding comfort and joy in unexpected places, and facing disability and death. This book is filled with powerful passages from women who turned their experiences of aging into art, and Burack-Weiss ties their words to her own struggles and epiphanies, framing their collective observations with key insights from social work practice.

The Lioness in Winter: Writing an Old Woman's Life, by Ann Burack-Weiss

Review

The Lioness in Winter speaks to pain, illness, reflection, and even suicide. Given the author's experience as a researcher―once a middle-aged scholar who believed in the texts that we use to train the next generation of gerontologists―her perspective is particularly well informed. She has not only taught it, but now lives it. She writes from a unique and important vantage point.

(Kate de Medeiros, Miami University)

The Lioness in Winter is a lovely book, and not only for the writers Ann Burack-Weiss quotes, although their lines are gorgeous: Toni Morrison's acceptance speech on winning the Nobel Prize; a letter from Colette's mother and Colette's proud memory of it--when she is at her lowest and most uneasy, Colette glories in being the child of such a mother! Burack-Weiss describes her own experience of aging, and she takes inspiration from these virtual mothers–women who are old, bruised, and brilliant, aflame with words. I read the book pen in hand, keyboard nearby–so I could get down lines I need to remember, books I long to read.

(Arlene Heyman, author of Scary Old Sex: Short Stories)

This is one of those rare books filled with both profound wisdom and language that captivates and enthralls. Ann Burack-Weiss joins her illustrious group of 'old lady' authors in exploring the experience and meaning of aging. Attempting to navigate the losses inherent in the aging process, she turns to her lionesses, from Colette and Simone de Beauvoir to Adrienne Rich and Maya Angelou, seeking comfort and inspiration. An author tells her story. Burack-Weiss answers with hers. The fortunate reader learns from them all while basking in the beauty of their words.

(Linda B. Sherby, author of Love and Loss in Life and in Treatment)

Burack Weiss takes a subject that we might not necessarily want to face―aging and our declining years―and elevates it into an inspiring and inspired conversation with the greatest female minds ever put in print, including hers. This literary guided tour of the 'sunset years' left me wiser, more prepared, and just plain better for having read it. Instead of that damned AARP magazine, The Lioness in Winter is really what should be showing up at our doorsteps.

(Liz Tuccillo, author of He's Just Not That into You)

Filled with warmth, wisdom, and knowledge, Burack-Weiss's work eloquently encourages dialogue and understanding about the inner and outer life of aging women.

(Publisher's Weekly - Starred)

Lovely... Encouraging... The Lioness in Winter is the story of one person's effort to know and give value to herself as an old woman―a person with intellectual curiosity and the ability to accept change with equanamity.

(Women's Review of Books)

A slim and beautiful volume that is part memoir, part career-confessional, but most compellingly a collection of writings on aging from women [Ms. Burack-Weiss] admires.

(East Hampton Star)

I benefitted by learning how other women, including famous writers and thinkers traveled the older stages of their lives. Some withwisdom and humor, some others coped with illnesses but in all, acceptance rather than denial gave them strength. The author shared her own experience and process which leant an intimacy in her writing, particularly about her recent widowhood.

East Pakistan, 1968: In Sariyah's village, shame is a virtue she never mastered. As a child, she learned to read in secret, kept talismans against her father's orders, and questioned everything, even Allah. Now she is practicing how to be a "woman with shame," torn between promises to her family and to herself. She yearns to join a movement with her fellow Bengalis, who are gripping onto their language and cultural identity against colonial powers - but she is continuously sucked into the narrow visions of her father. In the midst of all this, an American has come to teach English. Rodney Creed bursts into this tension-filled world with the bright optimism of a college graduate, too eager to sense the rumbling ground beneath him - until he meets Sariyah. When worlds collide this way, there is no telling who will be shaken the most. Rodney believes he is there to teach, but he will learn painful, irreversible things. Without Shame is a love story at its core - but not in the traditional sense. It's about love of one's country, culture, God, and language. It's about the power of identity to shine through when other forces threaten to overshadow it.

Symbolic and Engaging By Alex Smith "Without Shame" is a smooth read and has an engaging storyline, and on a deeper level there is a lot of room to read between the lines. The author uses a lot of symbolism to portray neocolonial theory and the "white savior" concept. It's also a great intro to interesting history on what led up to the Bengali revolution. I highly recommend this for students (or anyone!) to engage in conversations about cultural autonomy and the effects of colonialism, because there are a lot of layers to pull apart here.I like that the characters have flaws because they bring out nuances in other characters. For instance, Rodney could be irritating in the way he acts toward Bengalis, sort of like he thinks he's superior. But he has redeeming qualities, too. He brings out these teachable moments from Sajib, Sariyah's uncle and an educated Bengali who is involved (in some obscure, discreet way) in preparing for the revolution. I think every reader might like the conversations Sajib has with Rodney, where they argue questions that are really thought-provoking.One downside is I wish the writer was a little more literal about the effects of colonialism, for the benefit of the more literal reader. I say it's still worth reading and that the reader should keep an eye out for the symbolism within.

By katie Without Shame introduces differing perspectives on the culture of East Pakistan leading up to liberation and establishment of Bangladesh. We first meet Sariyah, a young Bengali woman who struggles to find her place in her society and family. Much of the exposition is devoted to establishing Sariyah’s village, family dynamic, and surroundings, setting her up as the protagonist of the story. We later meet Rodney, a recent college graduate from the U.S. who must explore his reasons for traveling to East Pakistan, his attitudes toward non-Western cultures, and what his relationship with Sariyah really means for him and for her.Being a shorter novel, Without Shame leaves the reader to interpret, making it necessary to read closely. For some readers, it may be easy to focus on the commentary on neocolonialism and the “white savior” attitude that Rodney’s character sometimes brings to the surface. Still, his character is quietly complex in that he carries redeeming qualities, forcing the reader to confront the grey areas between cultural sensitivity and ignorance.Sariyah’s character brings a similar complexity to the story. She is simultaneously rebellious against and loyal to her culture, highlighting the struggle of being caught between love of country while hoping for change. As a white reader from the U.S., I found the relationship between Sariyah and Rodney to be a helpful in reconciling my own attitudes toward some aspects of Bengali culture discussed in the novel with which I was unfamiliar.Other reviewers have pointed out that this book would be helpful for readers who are unfamiliar with the Bengali revolution in East Pakistan, and I found it to be just that. Without Shame has introduced me to a country and history that I previously knew little about and gave me a jumping point to learn more and gain a deeper understanding.

While we have always known about colonialism, this book brings the reader to the point of feeling as if he were there. A wonderful read and a wonderful view of history.

With You Always, by Diana Gardiner

About the Author Diana grew up in Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After she married and left Steel City, she and her family lived for a time in Washington D.C., West Virginia and Ohio. When her two children were old enough to attend grammar school, Diana went to college. At Ohio State University, she earned her BA in History of the Near East, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and her MA in American History. After teaching Social Studies at East High School in Columbus, Ohio for five years, Diana moved to Madrid, Spain to teach at the American School of Madrid. A one-year contract turned into a twenty-two-year stay and a new career teaching on the college level. She began to teach history, political science, and English writing for American universities in Madrid, including the University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland, and St. Louis University. Happily, her teaching schedule allowed for extensive travel in Europe, with forays into Egypt and North Africa. While Diana lived in Spain, her first book was published. It was a college textbook for international students entitled Strategies for Success (in an American University) and was sold in colleges and universities in Spain and the U.S. She also frequently wrote feature articles for a bi-lingual international Christian magazine called The Christian Communique. When Diana returned to the U.S. from Spain in 2002, she changed career direction. She was seeking a way to combine her faith, her joy in writing, and her interests in music, history and current events. She soon discovered writing Christian romance novels was her new calling. As one might expect, her love of Spain and interest in music in and social issues are recurring themes in her novels. In the years since 2002, Diana has written five romance novels, with a sixth to be published in 2015. Her stories range from the American Civil War to contemporary times. Locales include Spain and various sites in the U.S. Diana met her British husband, Denis, in Madrid over thirty years ago. A true Christian romance! They live neat Baltimore, Maryland, and both of them are full-time writers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was just a very boring book for me By Daina Freeman This book was okay. I didn't end up finishing it because it just never caught my attention. There wasn't enough story development. I found myself skipping through paragraphs because they weren't adding to the story and by the time I'd made it through 1/2 of the story I figured I didn't need to finish the rest. It was just a very boring book for me.

Although I am a woman, I read this here to see which advice the author would give the males of this world to conquer the lady of their dreams. I must say that he really knows what he is talking about. Starting with the basics like outfit and hygiene, he emphasizes the importance of the right emotional and mental attitude that a guy needs to score. Highly recommended for all men that need advice in this area.

By John Grob The only reason I didn't give this author 5 stars is because he got a little bit arrogant in places but other than that, I found this book to be rather entertaining. Too bad I didn't have have some of this info when I really needed it back in high school.
