This book of "recipes and memories," from the author's summers spent at an Oregon lodge in her youth, provides a uniquely fascinating journey back to a more rustic (and simple) time. Throughout the book, the author recreates the experience of spending the week at the lodge in the 70s and 80s in a tone devoid of dewy-eyed nostalgia and maudlin sentiment, providing a glimpse into an idyllic family vacation and life that one can only hope to replicate in a more complicated world.The recipes are evidently authentic - there are no quinoa, arugula or other currently trendy ingredients. No organic items or new cooking techniques are called for, no gimmicks. There are no staged color pictures - only black and white pictures from the author's past. Despite all this, reading the book is an extremely soothing experience indeed.It's great to see that Amazon is carrying small imprint, personal books that resonate with the rest of us.

Juli Tantum has written an engaging history of the recipes and traditions of an iconic Oregon lodge. The accessible recipes are timeless and augmented with interesting commentary about the cooking styles and ingredients of the day. Your mouth will water as you contemplate the simple but delicious dishes, e.g., oven fried chicken, Walla Walla onion-rice casserole, "Roblay's salad," blueberry buckle desert. But this is more than just a cookbook; it's a window into the Lodge experience -- of hot summer days in the Oregon cascades spent hiking, fishing and horseback riding and cool nights spent relaxing and talking about the days activities with friends over dinner. As Ms. Tantum writes, food was (and remains) an integral part of what makes the Lodge experience so memorable. This cookbook will appeal to chefs, kitchen novices, and those just interested in a good read about an era that still lives on.

Lovely Book about Tradition and Food By Jackson Even if you, like me, have never been to an Oregon lodge, you will still savor the story and recipes in this book. It's a loving tribute to the often understated but invaluable art of the classic American family outing. The book is about about family, tradition, and food that brings the family together. The recipes are of familiar food, perfectly executed. These are meals that both grown-ups and kids can enjoy, meals the family can gather around.
