By davids My wife and I live in Peru, South America, a tropical country, and I was hoping to find a book that used common tropical ingredients in a new way.Although this book is quite complete in covering a variety of recipes, a number of the most interesting recipes use ingredients that are not found outside of Africa. Also, commercial soup flavoring cubes are used quite a bit, termed "knorr, maggi," etc (but not specifying whether it is beef bouillon, chicken bouillon, fish flavor, etc), ingredients that definitely weaken the "traditional food" idea of a country-specific cookbook.English is not the author's first language and some of the instructions are not easy to decipher; there are many errors in spelling and grammar. For example, "I like to commence cooking jollof rice with the same oil I used in frying the chicken. Using a fresh oil is just the same as cooking without the chicken stock (meat water) which actually hold over 70 percent of the ingredient that is used in making most Nigerian foods, you will end up with a tasteless meal."Also the nutritional advice can be pretty formless, a typical example being "There are two types of salad that are popularly eaten in Nigeria, Salads happens to be one of the healthiest sorts of foods that I know, especially the vegetable salad, I also like the fruit salad but this is by no means in comparison with the former."For someone living in Nigeria and wanting to learn the names and ways of cooking local dishes, I believe this book would be very useful.

The very best thing about this cookbook is that there are step by step directions with actual pictures of the delicious food being prepared. You can't help but be successful with this guidance unlike other recipe books that give you nothing to help you with the food preparation. Another feature of this book that makes it stand out above other recipe books is the accompanying nutritional guide for each recipe. You know that you are eating healthy with these Nigerian foods with the information given. This cookbook is also a cultural treasure. The chef tells you where the food originated from in Nigeria. It is always a joy to cook from this cookbook. Thank you, Chy.

True Stories of the courage and grit behind Alaska's fierce independence.A mysterious vigilante murder in Nebraska, the Alaska Gold Rush, muckraking politics that lead to the suicide of an American hero and the ambitious, wealthy men vying for control of Alaskan business and industry at the turn of the 20th century. This third edition has been released with new, never-before-published content outside the Alaska Historical Society Journals. It reveals a first-hand account of the early development of the Alaska railway system and the story behind the richly funded, entrepreneurial Alaska Syndicate initiative that lead to the famous "Keystone Canyon Shoot-out." The discovery of a hand-written letter by George Hazelet to Catherine Wilson, a nomadic chronicler of events in the early Alaska territory and publisher of the historical COPPER TINTS, gives us an encompassing and refreshing first-hand account of the early railway development in what is still known as the "Last American Frontier."This is the true story revealed of three men who were the prime movers behind an ambitious, turn-of-the-twentieth-century plan to develop Alaska-the J. P. Morgan - Guggenheim Alaska Syndicate, builder of the Kennecott Copper Mining Company, as well as the Copper River & Northwestern Railway. George Cheever Hazelet, Stephen Birch and Captain David Jarvis were true pioneers of this great Alaska Territory and were backed by enormously wealthy men to whom failure was unacceptable. The challenges and setbacks of this gallant trio have been beautifully captured and documented in this third edition by the award-winning Alaska historian and author, the late Elizabeth A. Tower, MD. The re-release of this book with its additional content stands as a tribute to Dr. Tower's memory and the life she led as a true Alaskan.

Icebound Empire: Industry and Politics on the Last Frontier 1898 - 1938, by Elizabeth A. Tower

Review "A fascinating tale of the intersection of politics, railway wars, adventurism and entrepreneurism on the last great American frontier. The book focuses on the lives and work of three of the most influential men in developing Alaska in the late 1800s and early 1900s: George Cheever Hazelet, David Henry Jarvis, and Stephen Birch. Each played a leading role in the most ambitious early industrial development schemes in Alaska, and each was ultimately implicated in a dramatic and historically-pivotal shootout that took place in Keystone Canyon, near Valdez. Over one hundred illustrations, political cartoons, and newspaper headlines bring the story to life and transport the reader back in time to what is perhaps the most exciting period of Alaska history. This is a well-written and impeccably researched work. It will appeal to the casual reader and the historian alike. It is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in Alaskan history." -Kevin T., Amazon.com "Alaska may be the most physically impressive State in the union, and its rugged beauty and idiosyncratic people have inspired some of the greatest American narrative nonfiction and fictionalized books. From Jack London, John Muir and Robert Service in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to John McPhee, Jon Krakauer and Jonathan Raban at the end of the 20th century, writers go north to Alaska to chronicle tough, flawed people crashing against primeval nature....Icebound Empire is an interesting mix of the two styles. Like the latter works, it focuses on individual personalities, drawing from primary sources. However the author's concern is not with the fate of individuals, but with how they interacted with political forces to shape Alaska during the late District and early Territorial periods....This book's blend of history and personality, focusing on characters with deep Alaskan roots who rose high enough to be bit players in national politics, offers insight into the period, and also into Alaska's chronic problems in dealing with the lower 48. It's entertaining as well, and well written. I recommend this book both to people interested in Alaska history and people interested in Alaska people." -Aaron C. Brown [1000 Top Reviewer] Amazon.com

Brown Alaska may be the most physically impressive State in the union, and its rugged beauty and idiosyncratic people have inspired some of the greatest American narrative nonfiction and fictionalized books. From Jack London, John Muir and Robert Service in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to John McPhee, Jon Krakauer and Jonathan Raban at the end of the 20th century, writers go north to Alaska to chronicle tough, flawed people crashing against primeval nature.More recently, first person mythic accounts by Johns, Jacks and Bobs seem to be losing fashion to more historical accounts by authors with names like Howard (The Floor of Heaven), Charlotte (Gold Diggers) and Danielle (Polar Winds). These works make extensive use of primary sources, including journals, letters and contemporary court records, photographs and newspaper accounts, which gives them authenticity to make up for the grand sweep macho drama and literary quality of the older works. I'd also mention here the recent publication of George Hazelet's journal.Icebound Empire is an interesting mix of the two styles. Like the latter works, it focuses on individual personalities, drawing from primary sources. However the author's concern is not with the fate of individuals, but with how they interacted with political forces to shape Alaska during the late District and early Territorial periods. One example is extended coverage of the Keystone Canyon confrontation, probably the last of the famous Old West shootouts. The facts are tame compared to legend, only one person fired, and the only fatality was caused by a ricochet and bad doctoring. One side was deluded and the other was confused, neither one's interests were served by the fight. The contested ground shortly became worthless and lawyers made tens of thousands of dollars arguing about it for years afterwards. The book will be most appealing to readers who know some US history from the Civil War to the New Deal. In a nutshell, Republican Congresses during the Civil War, without having to bother with Democrats, passed radical legislation that set the terms for the settlement of the Western frontier. This resulted in a flood of pioneers who endured tremendous hardship to build vibrant and prosperous societies out of the wilderness; and it also resulted great risks and great profits for Eastern banks and business interests; and it also resulted in brazen cronyism and theft by politically connected cheats, not to mention massacres of natives and other crimes. By the 1890s a strong backlash developed that would fuel diverse movements including populism, conservationism and progressivism.Due to its distance and extreme physical challenges, Alaska was about 30 years behind in its development, which means when it could have used Washington federal services and New York development capital, those things were stalled by gridlock focused on issues of more relevance to Montana, Nevada, Utah and Oregon than virtually unpopulated and undeveloped Alaska. The result was not some productive compromise like a kinder, gentler exploitation but policies that were good for neither pioneers nor bankers, but that set those groups at each others' throats. By the 1930s, when Alaska had finally developed to the point that the progressive issues might have been relevant, Washington had lost interest in favor of the New Deal. It was not until WWII that the Eastern establishment awoke to the importance of Alaska, and that (plus Statehood) did a little to ease national politics playing out in dysfunctional ways 3,500 miles Northwest. But only a little. The issues described in this book will resonate with Alaskans today. One minor gripe is the book needs more and better maps. To make sense of the story you need some feeling for the possible routes linking the valuable minerals in the interior with the rivers and possible harbors on the coast (as well as the potential overland connections through Canada, although those are almost ignored in this book, and the sea connections to Siberia, East Asia the west coasts of North and South America). Flat outlines of the State with cities and rivers marked are not adequate because they don't show the physical barriers, nor distinguish navigable from non-navigable portions of rivers. A dozen large scale maps of key areas with a few smaller scale linking maps would save readers from having to run to the Internet (or an Atlas) every few pages. Moreover chronology as well as geography matters. An overland trip from Valdez to the Matanuska River, for example, was a very different proposition in 1897 versus 1917.Another minor gripe is the author's obvious sympathy for sourdoughs leads her to downplay or ignore some of the ugliness. Antisemitism played a large role in the fight against the (imaginary) "Morganheim colossus" (imaginary in the sense that neither Morgan nor Guggenheim had any grand designs to monopolize Alaskan resources, which is not to say there weren't a lot of people in New York who wanted to make a lot of money in ways that would disadvantage people living in Alaska, but those people were not predominantly Jewish). Unpleasant treatment of Alaskan natives is not mentioned, nor shabby protection of Canadian rights (Canadians should have an honored place in the late 19th century and early 20th century histories of Alaska, but they tend to be taken for granted when they lend their considerable help, and demonized when they assert their rights, and they were hamstrung by lack of support from England). These things were not out of proportion to the casual racism, jingoism and prejudice of the times, but they stand out in the egalitarian meritocracy of the frontier. You expect them from a Washington politician or a New York newspaper editor, it's disappointing to find them in honest trailblazers and miners. This book's blend of history and personality, focusing on characters with deep Alaskan roots who rose high enough to be bit players in national politics, offers insight into the period, and also into Alaska's chronic problems in dealing with the lower 48. It's entertaining as well, and well written. I recommend this book both to people interested in Alaska history and people interested in Alaska people.

I was shocked by how detailed the book was. The tiniest details were included. In some places this definitely slowed the pace of the narrative, but it's absolutely incredible. I would definitely suggest this for any history lovers out there.**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**

The older I’ve gotten, the more like Dad I’ve become. I often find myself sitting at our kitchen table doing what Dad used to do. I can see him in my behavior. Now that he’s gone, I don’t mind being a smaller version of him. I know I am and I hope that I’ll be even more like him as I mature. What Dad taught me has made me better than had he not done so. And I want to share those lessons with you as a tribute to him and our family, and hope that these lessons make other families as great as ours. What you’re about to read are not “lessons” from Dad in the sense that he sat down with me and said, “Here’s what you have to do, Bob.” We never had even one of those types of conversations. But all that I learned from him was from his modeling what a good man does. He never really told me much, but he showed me A LOT! We cannot teach character. We cannot teach leadership. The best we can do is show it. People will then follow. If we want to make a positive difference in our families and our lives, example will be everything! ~Bob Vásquez

A classic amongst mythologists examining Central and South America’s pre-colonial past.

“A model of sound knowledge, crystallized in an attractive form, and enlivened by original criticism. Mr. Spence succeeds in giving his readers, in an hour, a comprehensive view of the nature of the Mexican and Peruvian religions, corrected up to the latest guesses of modern research, with sufficient detail of those terrible and picturesque rites and mythologies to attract the attention and impress the memory. The first and last of his six short chapters he devotes to epitomizing the latest surmises as to the origin of American peoples and religions, and the question of foreign influence on the latter….The religion of the Peruvians was much more naturalistic than that of the Mexicans….Mr. Spence also notices that behind and above the theocracy of Peru, and the polytheism of both countries, celebrated as it was in Mexico by atrocious ritual massacres, was the idea of One Supreme Being, to Whom appeal was made, especially in the rites of confession and absolution. The many gods were but, as it were, the personification of His attributes. Mr. Spence is of those who, hold that ‘the knowledge of that power is inalienable from the mind of man.’ He notices also that the sacrifices of the Mexicans were probably, and in some cases certainly, offered, not to appease the gods, but to nourish them. A possible parallel occurs to us in those curious texts of the Mosaic law and prophecies.” -The Academy, Volume 74, 1908

“In this study of Mexican and Peruvian mythology, the reader is introduced into a sphere of the most fascinating interest – the attitude towards the eternal verities of the people of a new and isolated world.” -The Open Court, 1911

A short enjoyable overview of ancient customs and beliefs By Alan I have almost no knowledge on Mexican or Peruvian mythology and found this to be a good overview on the ancient cultures and religions. The mythology description is pretty general and only talks about a few important stories and Gods. The description of the religious customs and rituals were very interesting

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. over 100 years ago By A. F. I just downloaded the book and noticed that it has a copyright date of 1907. I just started chapter 1 and felt it important to note that the comments about not knowing how long indigenous peoples have been here or how they got here is still a debate in history classes in college. Unfortunately, the debate only shows that those creating and continuing the argument did inadequate research. The US has long known that artifacts in Calico, CA have dated to about 200,000 years ago and that no one will ever know for sure how long indigenous peoples have been here because everything used was biodegradable. Another factor preventing such discovery is that the European destroyed most of history of the indigenous proples.I am glad though that the author addressed the fact that there is allot of room for discovery and reanalysis including that of the origin of the European, Caucasian. Some theories speculate at the origin from the African Albino then through selective mating resulted in modern human. Another theory being that Adam and Eve represent an escaped pair of African Albino or more creating current results. This book is definitely written with influence for the European. The sources range from the late 1700's to the late 1800's. I find it interesting very little has changed in scientific discovery about the indigenous peoples of this side of the ocean. Contrary to what the author writes about the indigenous peoples learning from the European or Asian, the probability of the European and Asian learning from indigenous peoples would more accurate. It has been a historical truth and common practice that the info gained was claimed proprietary and a discovery by the European. But as previously stated, the book is over 100 years old.Nevertheless I am interested in what science discovers next, what they alter, what they hide, and what mistakes they correct or admit to. Considering that the book is over 100 years old, I am eager to read what the European American and European knew then compared to now. I may update again pending.

How do you get workers to [consistently] do the ‘right things’ at 3:00AM when no one else is watching? The answer to this question provides the ultimate (yet little understood) solution to rapid and sustainable improvement in safety, reliability, and efficiency. The great news is- it’s not complicated. In 6-Hour Safety Culture, Tim Autrey offers tangible insight into how to achieve and sustain next-level performance in any organization. Using stories and anecdotes drawn from his experiences within the US Naval submarine service, nuclear power generation industry, and as Founder/CEO of the Practicing Perfection Institute, Inc., he breaks down the underlying science of human performance into simple understandable ‘chunks’. He offers a great deal of ‘simplicity on the far side of complexity’. In Part I, you will be enticed to think different as Tim Autrey takes you on a journey of awareness into the world of human performance. Building upon a foundation of four simple precepts, and a four-part ‘system’ for leveraging positive aspects of human nature, he then takes you into Part II, where you will learn how to truly influence the hearts, minds, and souls of your organization members. Moving from insight, to strategy, to action, Tim will teach you the Individual Performance Model™, the same model used by leaders throughout history to influence human behavior and develop high levels of personal accountability. He then takes this model into the third dimension, providing a proven recipe for rapid and sustainable team, department, and organizational culture transformation. In Part III, you will learn to do different as Tim directly explores and develops the tenets of human error, safety culture, and just culture. He breaks through the hype, teaching you what’s important (and what to avoid) in any performance improvement effort. He then develops a simple four-step ‘recipe’ for engaging organization members on an ongoing basis; a method that directly promotes alignment with organization principles and a one team approach to doing business. He ties everything together with the Human Performance Blueprint- a step-by-step implementation guideline for achieving and sustaining next-level performance within any organization. Tim wraps up the 6-Hour Safety Culture journey with a challenge- a challenge to you and everyone else who chooses to learn…and take action. A challenge to make (as Steve Jobs put it) a dent in the universe; to truly help make your organization, and ultimately the world, a better and safer place.

Many of them provide some theoretical framework, which is used to support their respective theories. But few authors are able to explain how someone can practically implement their ideas. Autrey leverages his own experience to bring culture change to life. His use of self-effacing humor and straightforward language make this book even more readable. While the reader may initially wonder how the initial concepts are connected, Autrey pulls it all together into a blueprint for change that anyone can follow. It seems like a bold statement to suggest that culture change of any kind can happen in six hours. Yet, Autrey makes a strong case that it is indeed possible – as long as we understand who are the real change agents and how we can engage them. This book shows you how!

By Nicole I have had the personal experience of testing the principles that Tim Autrey has so masterfully presented in this book. The practical application of these insights and concepts can have a tremendous, sustainable, immediate effect on your working culture. The piece that I use most often (both personally and professionally) is the Code of Honor, Chapter Six:Transform Your Culture (One Team at a time). In my opinion, it has the key ingredients to open up authentic, honest, straightforward communication between people in a way that most people are not accustomed, revealing underlying issues and directing the path forward. I highly recommend immersing yourself in this book and testing these theories for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Similarly, organizations often know a good bit more about Human Performance, Safety and LEAN than they ever apply. The genius of this book is that it gives individuals and organizations a complete road map for changing the culture so individuals in an organization are freed to bring forth their best. It doesn’t much matter how much one knows if you cannot apply it. Tim’s book is alive, full of great leadership insights and it gives us the “handles” needed to live what we know. No matter what level you are on now, this book will propel you to the next level.

I’m happy to rustle up basics, not so bothered about how my food tastes or is presented. I just like food that gets the job done. My Mom on the other hand, is a different story. She loves her food to taste good and be really appealing… I had difficulty getting her to convert her diet habits until I found this book. The recipes are fantastic, my mom is happy… And I’m happy that she’s healthier. A great section on seafood recipes. Does what the book sets out to do, provide great recipes with no fluff. Thanks, it’s a great help!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very disappointing. By jeanne The recipes look ok, but absolutely no nutrition info was listed after the recipe. This info is needed when trying to keep your keto diet carbs at 20-30 grams. And it's way too much trouble trying to figure out each recipe. How did this book get so many great reviews ??? Would return but it'll cost me the cost of the book to do so.

I had never smoked anything before but once I got this book and read some of the recipes inside, I had to try a pork loin roast. I learned so much about how to properly smoke something, plus how to determine if something was smoked properly. My first recipe was a BIG hit with my family! Looking forward to the next one this weekend. Thanks!

I bought a smoker a while back and tried a few recipes, but one in particular made me put the smoker away and it's been collecting dust. Then I saw this book. I'm ready to pull the smoker out of the garage and put it to use again. Here there is a mix of traditional recipes with some new ones that I'm excited to try. Chili Smoked Chicken, Smoke and Peal Shrimp, Smoked Maple Syrup Bacon, and even a recipe for a Smoked Beer Can Chicken. Doesn't it all sound great? Well I thought so and I'll be giving these a try.
