This essay can be considered a new chapter in my book Digital McLuhan, published in 1999, or before the advent of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and the social media of our age. Marshall McLuhan's ideas, including hot and cool, the medium is the message, and the tetrad, are applied to help us understand selfies, tweeting, iconic television shows such as The Sorpanos and Mad Men, the advent of streaming television and binge watching, the Arab Spring, the U.S. Presidential election of 2016, and the Kindle revolution itself.

Levinson, on “McLuhan in an Age of Social Media.” By Food for Thought Levinson, on “McLuhan in an Age of Social Media.”The value of Levinson’s article goes beyond updating his 1999 edition of Digital McLuhan. In the typically artful style of his lectures, the elements of McLuhan’s communication Tetrad are brought into twenty-first century perspective to provide a matrix for a multi-generational conversation about our digital media environment. Beginning with a clear explanation of McLuhan’s Tetrad method of analyzing communication devices, he applies to these principles his own take with examples of recent social communication devices and applications. I look forward to asking my students, (none of whom were born when McLuhan’s son Eric published his father’s last manuscript) how they might relate the media they use every day to McLuhan’s tetrad of media as interpreted here by Levinson. They will, I think, appreciate that Levinson is well aware of the digital products they use and how they use them. For them, the flipping action of photographs goes far beyond what those of us who read McLuhan "back in the day" even realize: as Levinson points out, lately users have become producers – like Stanford students Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, who developed Snapchat to circumvent the criticism that the embarrassing photos (often selfies) posted on Facebook and elsewhere are hazardous to the subjects’ professional reputations. Levinson’s commentary about Snapchat reminds me that the app retrieves and then flips what was a problem for the first inventors of photography: the tendency of images to disappear for lack of effective fixing chemistry.Levinson also provides a matrix for a conversation between those who have grown up exclusively in a digital world, and those who reached adulthood in the age of desktop computing and floppy disks and something called record albums. Some of the latter embraced new and convenient methods of interacting with the world, while others have accepted them only selectively and reluctantly. How would they react to the remark that the photograph “obsolesces verbal and written descriptions of events”? Can Levinson’s article, (updating his print book) itself be analyzed in terms of the tetrad?Readers will also find interesting Levinson's discussion of the impact of digital publishing on traditional views of information distribution.“McLuhan in an Age of Social Media” will remain current, as the user qua producer trend continues. In an ironic “flip” of the self-destruct mechanism embedded in the Snapchat app, Spiegel and Murphy have updated their user agreement to acknowledge that posted material might end up being re-used for development and what they refer to as “business partners.” So – I might ask my students, is that amplification, obsolescence, retrievability, or what? Levinson’s ability to take what might be dry theory and make it relevant to a new generation of readers makes it a perfect supplemental reading for any media or communications history course. That should not deter anyone from making required reading of Digital McLuhan, the volume that inspired this article.McLuhan in an Age of Social Media

I do wish Levinson had found another verb than "to obsolesce" for "supercede, render obsolete" but probably I'm the only person that would bother. :-) McLuhan's ideas are remarkably relevant to today's world, perhaps even more important than they were during his life.

Creative handcrafted spirits: This book presents an inspiring overview of the best distilleries around the world. Gin from Berlin, whiskey from New York's oldest distillery, herbal liqueurs from the Chiemgau foothills: Out of the Jar features a wide array of spirits from small manufacturers and private distilleries that produce regional products using premium ingredients. The revolution experienced over the last few years in the fields of coffee, bread, and craft beer is influencing the production of spirits too. The discerning connoisseur seeks that special drop made by artisanal manufacturers in limited batches. It is a rebellion against the uniformity of the standard product range, as well as an expression of creativity, innovation, and the joy of a good drink. Out of the Jar offers a selection of the best and most unusual drinks in this category and tells the stories behind them. It reports on historic family-run distilleries experiencing their revival, young lateral thinkers, and wild adventure-seekers on the hunt for extraordinary raw materials and radical outcomes. The book shows the spectrum of possibilities that can result from experimenting with unusual ingredients. The characteristics of different spirits are explained, and insights into their production are offered along with original recipe ideas. Last but not least, these drinks' witty labels and imaginative packaging are also explored. Out of the Jar is a guide book for professionals, gourmet enthusiasts, and people who are interested in craft spirits and liqueurs. Whether at a bar or at home, these sophisticated drinks demonstrate an advanced appreciation for alcohol's finest; they can be used to create distinctive cocktails or to enhance your cooking. Here's to you!

It’s a saga of the good old times whose warmth still persists. Set against the college background, it is a tale of blooming friendship and dying uncertainty. "America's Other Army" brings the high-flying world of international diplomacy down to earth and puts a human face on a mysterious profession that has undergone a dramatic transformation since September 11, 2001. Through the stories of American diplomats, the book explains how their work affects millions of people in the United States and around the world every day, and how it contributes directly to U.S. security and prosperity. It shows a more inclusive American diplomacy that has moved beyond interacting with governments and has engaged with the private sector, civil society and individual citizens. Having visited 77 embassies and consulates, and interviewed more than 600 American diplomats, the author reveals a Foreign Service whose diversity and professional versatility have shattered old perceptions and redefined modern diplomacy. But he also depicts a service not fully equipped to address the complex challenges of the 21st century.

America's Other Army: The U.S. Foreign Service and 21st-Century Diplomacy (Second Updated Edition), by Nicholas Kralev

Review "I developed deep respect for the U.S. Foreign Service, and Nicholas Kralev shows why. These outstanding diplomats take on tough and dangerous jobs, and in the new edition of America's Other Army Kralev brings us up to date on how they deserve our support."-- Madeleine K. Albright, former secretary of state"Nicholas Kralev's excellent account of the U.S. Foreign Service at the beginning of this new century makes vivid the continuing relevance and struggle of diplomacy to keep pace with a rapidly changing international landscape. For over a decade, Kralev has embedded himself with America's professional diplomats. He presents the Foreign Service as it is -- with all its flaws and strengths -- and through his portraits of civilians on the front lines of diplomacy."-- William J. Burns, former deputy secretary of state"As a longtime member of the U.S. Foreign Service, I have come to know and appreciate Nicholas Kralev's broad knowledge of how it operates and serves the nation. I can think of no better source for an aspiring diplomat, a senior business executive, an academic or a think-tank expert to consult than Kralev's seminal work on the Foreign Service."-- Thomas R. Pickering, former undersecretary of state

About the Author Nicholas Kralev is an international affairs expert and entrepreneur. A former Financial Times and Washington Times correspondent, for more than a decade he witnessed the conduct of American diplomacy while accompanying four U.S. secretaries of state on their travels around the world -- Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright. His work as a journalist, speaker, educator and consultant has taken him to over 100 countries. For details, visit NicholasKralev.com.

Harrop I spent 39 years in the Foreign Service, toward the end as ambassador and State Department inspector general, which I assume is why the author asked me to critique his manuscript. Mr. Kralev provides a vibrant, accurate description of what American diplomats actually do, something little understood by their countrymen. Of course there is danger--nine of my friends and colleagues suffered a violent end--but this book dwells more on the wide variety of duties performed and the sense of national service that permeates this small corps of public servants. The author took advantage of his job as a journalist covering the State Department, which entailed traveling tens of thousands of miles with the Secretary. He interviewed scores of Foreign Service Officers and watched what went on in embassies, consulates, and some more remote locations. He describes the occasional excitement and glamor of the Foreign Service career, as well as the strain upon marriages, the challenge of educating children. He criticizes systemic flaws he finds. The narrative flows smoothly. If you are interested in an honest, often surprising account of America's "first line of defense", here it is.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Ripped from the headlines By Darrell Delamaide The recent killing of American diplomats in Libya illustrates the main thesis of this important book in tragically dramatic fashion. The needs of national security in a volatile world have put U.S. Foreign Service officers on the front lines in new and sometimes extremely hazardous fashion.Kralev's timely account of how the State Department represents America's interests around the world illuminates a vital component our security apparatus that remains too often in the shadows. The author, a former diplomatic correspondent for two major newspapers, brings the Foreign Service to life with numerous profiles and anecdotes from diplomats he has encountered over the years. In addition, interviews with the current secretary of State and her recent predecessors provide invaluable insight into how America's diplomatic mission has evolved in recent years. The author's first-hand accounts of visits to American embassies around the world give the reader a taste of a life that is at times exotic, even glamorous, but often gritty and dangerous as well. What comes through most strongly in this chronicle of several active and retired diplomats, however, is the sense of duty and mission that motivates their service. Kralev doesn't gloss over the shortcomings or problems in the State Department, but he lets the words and deeds of these public servants speak for themselves and the reader can't help but be impressed by their talent and dedication.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read on American Diplomacy By Dan Mahoney Nick Kralev provides an excellent account on not only the big picture of American diplomacy, but more importantly how the Foreign Service operates and how it fits into the bigger picture of US foreign policy. The book is extremely effective in providing a personal element to the Foreign Service as it utilizes the experiences of past and present Foreign Service Officers to illustrate to the reader what diplomats go through on a day-to-day basis.Given recent events in North Africa, "America's Other Army" is an important read in order to gain a more complete understanding of the nuts and bolts of US diplomatic work abroad and not just the big picture policy objectives laid out from Washington. Furthermore, Kralev strives at all times to emphasize the people that make up the Foreign Service and the extraordinary talents they must possess in order to successfully fulfill the tasks asked of them in their work.In all, "America's Other Army" provides an excellent overview of the work of the Foreign Service, which is a subject that is not explored enough as it should given the current importance of diplomacy for American interests.

Food allergies are becoming more common with every passing year. In America alone there are over 15 million people who suffer with a food allergy of one kind or another. The troubling thing about that statistic is that it is rising. Among children, 8% have a food allergy, with the youngest segment of children being affected the worst. What can be even worse is when multiple food allergies strike at once. The Big 9 addresses that problem by providing recipes to avoid the 9 most common food alergens: wheat, soy, eggs, milk, shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and the newest addition, processed sugar. It starts to explain the different types of food allergy. The explanations are well done, short and to the point, no geek talk. An example is the difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance. The substitute part is great too. Comprehensive, one thing I would add is, coconut oil is also good for frying (olive oil is suggested). The recipes all include exact ingredient lists, good directions and photos. My favorite is Italian Vegetable Spaghetti. All in all a useful book if you or your children have food allergies.

Good reference on food allergens By Amazon Customer Lots on info on common food allergies, quite a breeze and enjoyable to read, the list of food stuff to look for potential allergens was very helpful. Recipes enclosed were interesting and sparked my imagination to try substituting various ingredients for a healthier meal or snack.

I do not personally suffer from any food allergies, several members of my family suffer from them. I have been vegetarian for the better part of 20 years, and for the past few years have taken on vegan eating 90% of the time (I allow myself to eat certain organic meats, eggs, and milk products). The recipes look delicious (for my tastes, the meat free recipes).Great job!

By Rob Natiuk In my hands now I have recipes for "5 fat-burning foods and snacks" that are guaranteed to help me lose body fat. Well, I'd like that! The recipes also list the basic nutritional values -- protein, carbs, fiber, cholesterol, sodium. Helpful. Clear and simple instructions how to prepare these recipes.1. Broccoli and Feta. Omelet with toast looks palatable.2. Spice green tea smoothie. Ooh--green tea with cayenne! That should get my eyeballs rolling.3. Chocolate-dipped banana bites. I'd go for those in a heartbeat -- for a healthier heart.4. Banana and almond butter toast. Got to try that banana on toast thing. Looks good even though my favorite recipe for banana is banana banana and banana!5. Honey grapefruit with banana. Simple and fruity. That's it. Kind of short and limited. But a good start.
