By Robert Wright, Jr., Ph.D., COFT The authors have done a wonderful public service by releasing this holiday grief coping book right before the holiday season. The book is a touching testament to their levels of expertise since they have been able to elegantly and simply discuss the difficult topic of death, dying and grieving. A particularly helpful section is their discussion of the need to speak to your children about the death of a closed loved one. This is an all too often overlooked aspect of the grieving process that unfortunately leaves many people scarred as adults since deaths of close loved ones which occurred during their childhood, were never fully discussed within the family context or were discussed in hushed tones with subtle nuances unintelligible to a young child. This can often lead to hidden levels of Existential grief; the source of which-years later-may be hard to identify, deal with, and resolve.Readers may also find the "Notes" space after each section of advice given helpful since this feature allows you to easily jot down your thoughts and feelings while reading the book. This way you won't have to hunt around for a sheet of paper; more importantly, when you return to the book weeks, months or even years later, your notes will be right in front of you which should allow for deeper levels of reflection, gratitude, and hopefully a healing recovery. The tips provided by the authors are practical and easy to implement. For instance, they suggest that if you're having a hard time dealing with figuring out how to decorate the house for the holidays, that's it's important to keep your focus on being gentle with yourself. In this case, the authors recommend simply decorating a room or even a shelf if that's all you can manage. This type of well-worn and wise advice may help grievers more easily step back from painful memories without having a heightened sense of loss, guilt or feeling less than perfect if they do not decorate the entire house for the holidays.Dora and Christina also make clear that paying attention to self care is a critical part of the recovery process. Additionally, they point out that since each of us is a unique individual, our grieving process is also individual-indeed, that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to grieve. The book also briefly mentions an important statistic: that it can take many many years for a person to heal and recover from the death of a close loved one. This contrasts with a long traditional maxim in the not too distant bereavement psychology literature that if an individual is not "over" the death of a close loved one within 6-12 months, then their grief was considered to be "pathological." Fortunately, a more enlightened modern view has begun to take hold which agrees with the position the authors take: that grieving and healing often do take some time and that the road to healing recovery is fraught with emotional obstacles which may take years to transit successfully.The book provides a helpful list of questions that the grieving individual can ask herself as well as giving practical tips for how to handle holiday parties and memories in a proactive way. The best part about this book is that the advice offered will leave you feeling uplifted whether you are grieving or not! The authors show readers how they can find their own "light at the end of the tunnel" as they walk the path of grief, bereavement, and grieving. They also acknowledge that since we are dealing with deep levels of personal pain, this is not an easy path but it is a more hopeful one when you listen to the advice the authors give. In my view, this a beautifully written book which is easy to read and understand. The fact that it deals with such a difficult and often taboo subject in our culture makes it all the more desirable a read. Throughout her very concise resource, you can almost hear Dora's voice as she compassionately and gently guides readers through a particularly difficult season. Key attributes of this book are its inclusion of suggested holiday activities in the absence of the loved one, affirmations, and a special section on helping children as they grieve. Her 5 Step Recipe for Coping with Holiday G.R.I.E.F also provides space for the reader to document reflections about each step.

It will benefit so many this holiday season who have lost loved ones. This subject can be so hard to talk about, but you sympathize with the readers. Anyone can enjoy this book with the simplicity it offers, but offers powerful tips to move forward. You make a Great Mother/Daughter team. Excellent Book. I will highly recommend it to others. Thank you for putting all the love and comfort into this book.
