[Read by Oliver Wyman] Through an intriguing story of parents struggling with their troubled children and with their own personal problems, The Anatomy of Peace shows how to get past the preconceived ideas and self-justifying reactions that keep us from seeing the world clearly and dealing with it effectively. Yusuf al-Falah, an Arab, and Avi Rozen, a Jew, each lost his father at the hands of the other's ethnic cousins. As the story unfolds, we discover how they came together, how they help warring parents and children to come together, and how we too can find our way out of the struggles that weigh us down. The choice between peace and war lies within us. As one of the characters says, ''A solution to the inner war solves the outer war as well.'' This book offers more than hope -- it shows how we can prevent the conflicts that cause so much pain in our lives and in the world.

From Publishers Weekly The premise of this follow-up to Leadership and Self-Deception is simple: people whose hearts are at peace do not wage war, whether they're heads of state or members of a family. In this semi-fictional narrative ("inspired by actual events") illustrating the principles of achieving peace, the setting is a two-day parent workshop at an Arizona-based wilderness camp for out-of-control teenagers, but the storyline is a mere setting for an instruction manual. Workshop facilitators Yusuf al-Falah, a Palestinian Arab whose father was killed by Israelis in 1948, and Avi Rozen, an Israeli Jew whose father died in the Yom Kippur War, use examples from their domestic lives and the history of their region to illustrate situations in which the normal and necessary routines of daily life can become fodder for conflict. Readers observe this through the eyes of one participant, a father whose business is in nearly as much trouble as his teenage son. The usefulness of the information conveyed here on how conflicts take root, spread and can be resolved more than compensates for the pedestrian writing. Review ''Profound in depth yet simple in message -- an astounding work of immense impact, both personally and professionally. This is the next major lever in terms of how organizations improve performance.'' --Nick Jessett, program manager, Rolls-Royce ''A powerful work that has a profound impact on all things personal and professional. It illustrates that the path to peace and to the resolution of our most troubling conflicts requires not only different actions but a different way of being. Even better, it shows you how to get there. It is a book I will share widely and return to again and again.'' --Laura Whitworth, cofounder, the Bigger Game Company and the Coaches Training Institute ''The Anatomy of Peace is one of those rare works that somehow finds its way into the heart. Before you know it you will be emotionally invested in the same process as the characters in this story. Be prepared to be at once challenged, moved, and called forth to become the person you know you should be.'' --Mike Bundrant, publisher, Healthy Times Magazine ''A stunning work of wisdom and insight . . . Everyone, from neighbors to the heads of nations, ought to read and live the teachings of this book.'' --Kent Murdock, president and CEO, O. C. Tanner ''Oliver Wyman creates characters well, while giving the parable a broad reading that makes its points obvious. Listeners who are curious about the Institute's efforts to promote peace will be interested and engaged.'' --AudioFile

If you loved Leadership, you'll love this one, too. If you are choosing between the two, I'd skip Leadership and start here. Anatomy picks up where Leadership leaves off, and is in some sense more advanced, but the concept(s) in these books are pretty simple and you might as well start here.In reading both of these books, I felt caught between two feelings. On the one hand, I felt like there is a lot of truth in what the authors are trying to convey, and that I could gain quite a bit by adopting some of their attitudes towards others. On the other hand, the way they delivered their message had a paternalistic, absolutist feeling to it that made me feel like Big Brother was writing to me. The books seems bent on convincing, rather than discussing, and the manner in which the material is presented is quite like propaganda. This is a short book, and easy enough to read. But, if you are interested in this topic, you could do better. I recommend instead: Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson. Mistakes Were Made is a much more direct and balanced look at the same topic, and I highly recommend it.

The concepts presented are useful for understanding and discussing conflict. However, I'm not convinced that anything presented in this book is really useful in resolving conflict. The book puts the burden on the individual reader by claiming that only you can create the necessary change in yourself and that only you know what you need to do. In taking this approach is does what many self help books do, that is it sounds detailed enough to be actionable but in reality it is too vague to be of any practical use. Worth reading if you want to better understand conflict but if you are expecting to find tools that will help you resolve your own conflicts I'd look elsewhere

A must read for those who are in the healthcare field By Barbara Taylor The anatomy of peace was an insightful book that helped me understand how I view other people and my self. The strategies and insights of this book helps you see people as people and not just objects.Self betrayal, justification and collusion are terms you will experience in this book. You can't change your behavior until you change your heart. If you have conflict in your workplace, I highly recommend that you read this book and change the thinking in your company or organization.
