1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Relatable on Many Levels By Jane Andrews I actually purchased this book through another outlet, but would like to provide a review here. This book was a hard one for me to put down before finishing it completely. In the interest of full disclosure, I knew the author when I was a teenager as I was a member of the traveling chorale her husband at that time directed. However, even if I did not have that connection I would have found the book interesting on several other levels. Although her story is unique, like the author, I, too, was born and raised in Indiana in a very strict, fundamental, and legalistic religious denomination. Eicholz accurately relates what that kind of life was like for a female child and youth. She most impressively conveys her innermost questioning thoughts about the rules of the church and how there must be a better way. She found a way to be true to herself without being rebellious or antagonistic toward the church.The authentic voice Eicholz used regarding her sexual development and her first marriage is refreshing and provides insight for the reader as to what drove her decisions at various junctures of her life. And she adequately depicted the social culture at that time that influenced her along the way.Anyone, male or female, that grew up in a strict religious environment during the 50's and 60's will be able to relate to this story. For anyone else, it will be an education about the era and those particular religious denominations that were so different from the more mainstream churches that were more socially accepted in our culture. The only reason I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is that there are some choppy transitions in the writing style. The book left me wanting to know "the rest of the story" subsequent to her first 30 years. I hope she decides to share with her reading audience her further spiritual development and the evolution of her second marriage. I would definitely read a sequel.

Smart and sassy -- a fascinating woman who was ahead of her time By Prof Lesa I couldn't put this book down, and read it from cover to cover (well, whatever you'd call it on a Kindle) without stopping.Different parts of this book will appeal to different audiences. For instance, the description of small-town life in Indiana before WWII will be useful to historials one day. It will also be useful to people studying the lives of pastors and their families during that era -- the expectations placed upon them by their congregations, and the financial insecurities that they suffered. Prohibitions against drinking, dancing, make-up and movies will seem almost unbelievable to younger readers.Another level of the book addresses a woman finding herself, and making difficult decisions in spite of heavy family expectations. We admire as the author gets an education and excels in her career. We cheer for her courage. We applaud her spunkiness, and wonder what her story would had been like had she been born several decades later -- when everyone takes the notions of women's empowerment and equality for granted.There are places where the prose could have been tightened a bit, and a few redundancies. However, you quickly forgive these because of the strength of the story itself, and the likeability of the narrator. Her keen intelligence, deep personal insights, and brutal honesty are what carry the book. You finish the last page wondering what this amazing woman is going to do next!

Morris "Martha Ruth, Preacher's Daughter: Her Journey"As a Professional Image Manager, I encourage my clients to "journal" their journey in order to develop a clearer understanding (over time) of how they reached and/or achieved their goals. Creating a personal narrative is difficult for those who enjoy writing and (especially) for those who dislike it. That being said, all the people I've coached to create their "life's journey" narrative have found the process a useful tool toward a clearer understanding of "self". Author, Marti Eicholz created an engaging, useful and inspiring template for those who understand that "reading-to-learn" is a useful way to begin. I would encourage you to use this narrative in your book groups and begin (as a group) to write your own.
