About the Author Born in South Korea, M.D. Couturier was raised in Michigan. Couturier, who is legally blind, once spent a month as an aid worker in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he unloaded supplies for an American dentist who was setting up a clinic there. When he’s not writing, Couturier enjoys listening to history books and watching movies.

Interesting Effort by New Author By bubbe barbara MD Couturier's first book might have benefited from a slightly older protagonist and a YA target audience. The vocabulary and characters are interesting, but the reader feels rushed as the story unfolds. As I remind my elementary students, "show, don't tell". I was hoping this would be a book I could read aloud to my class, but the author's lack of aspect in verb tense makes it a poor model as well. I must confess to only reading the first 8 and last 2 chapters. It's irritating to read a book for kids where killing is treated mildly, but smoking a pipe is not, and where a cheating, child-abandoning father is harshly judged in the final pages. Personally, I don't have a problem with the latter, but would not share this book with vulnerable children who still struggle with perceiving the world as black or white. I would love to see this book rewritten with the author's non-dominant hand, where he simply lets his story unfold across the page. It reminds me of F. Baum's colorfully descriptive Oz books, which I never entirely bought into as a child. Keep writing, MD. I did receive a copy of the book for free, and was asked to review it.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I felt a bit like I was in book two of a trilogy By Elizabeth Grande This was a nice little fantasy. I did feel as if there could have been more character and setting development in the beginning of the story. The heroine, and the reader, are swept into a world where they know nothing about it, but feel like they should. I felt like I'd missed something critical in the first couple pages. However Knights, dwarfs, and gryphons are always a welcome read. Thanks for an enchanting read!

By Maggie an engaging and action-packed adventure of a girl who has to leave home in order to return and realize how good her relationship with her family is ... while on this journey of discovery she is recognized as queen of the kingdom beneath the well and through the behavior of others comes to realize how important it is to be responsible by knowing what it is you really want ... i must say the story is well-structured and a fantasy that is believable ... well done indeed! and the adventures our young protagonist finds herself on are worth having as are the lessons learned from the adventures with her faithful companions. highly recommended, for young girls AND for those who love children's literature.the reader will "hear" echoes of classic children's literature/fairy tales/adventures in this book and in the best tradition of creativity the writer has made these story elements new again in this delightful adventure story of a girl finding her way home again.
