The thinkers who have been most influential on the attitudes of the New Left are examined in this study by one of the leading critics of leftist orientations in modern Western civilization. Scruton begins with a ruthless analysis of New Leftism and concludes with a critique of the key strands in its thinking. He conducts a reappraisal of such major left-wing thinkers as: E. P. Thompson, Ronald Dworkin, R. D. Laing, Jurgen Habermas, Gyorgy Lukacs, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Zizek, Ralph Milliband and Eric Hobsbawm. In addition to assessments of these thinkers' philosophical and political contributions, the book contains a biographical and bibliographical section summarizing their careers and most important writings. In Thinkers of the New Left Scruton asks, what does the Left look like today and as it has evolved since 1989? He charts the transfer of grievances from the working class to women, gays and immigrants, asks what can we put in the place of radical egalitarianism, and what explains the continued dominance of antinomian attitudes in the intellectual world? Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith?Scruton's exploration of these important issues is written with skill, perception and at all times with pellucid clarity. The result is a devastating critique of modern left-wing thinking.

Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left, by Roger Scruton

Review

"The book is a masterpiece, its rather too clever title notwithstanding. In crisp, sometimes brilliant prose, Mr. Scruton considers scores of works in three languages, giving the reader an understanding of each thinker’s overarching aim and his place within the multifaceted movement known as the New Left. He neither ridicules nor abuses the writers he considers; he patiently deconstructs them, first explaining their work in terms they themselves would recognize and then laying bare their warped assumptions and empty pretensions." ―Wall Street Journal

"Scruton’s book is not the dispassionate examination and measured assessment of philosophical arguments typical of analytic philosophers. It is a polemical dissection and indictment of the perceived destructive aims and tactics of the left. Earlier chapters on Sartre and Foucault, and on members of the Frankfurt School, particularly Adorno, are the most engaging." ―Samuel Freeman, The New York Review of Books

“Eminent British philosopher and polymath Scruton gives a sharp-edged, provocative critique of leading leftist thinkers since the mid-20th century . . . complex and erudite.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Caustic, highly recherché, and simply great fun to read for the questing intellectual soul.” ―Kirkus Reviews

"[H]onestly assesses the political and philosophical contributions of the Left [and] addresses what is likely our most pressing question: ‘Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith?'" ―Catholic World Report

About the Author Professor Roger Scruton is a graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge. He has been Professor of Aesthetics at Birkbeck College, London, and University Professor at Boston University. He is currently a visiting professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C. He has published a large number of books, including some works of fiction, and has written and composed two operas. He writes regularly for the Times, the Telegraph, and Spectator, and was for many years wine critic of the New Statesman.

It can be a bit esoteric (as is often the case with explanations of abstract concepts) but this is highly recommended for those By David Eaton I'm relatively new to Srcuton's work but I have found him to one of the more insightful and well-researched essayists on matters philosophy--- especially the specious attitudes of "the new left." The chapter "Culture Wars Worldwide" is especially coruscating. His explanations of Gramsci, Said and their methods regarding how to gain control via authoritarianism (whether fascist or communist) is a fascinating study in how the current culture wars are playing out. The seeds or resentment and discontent were being sowed long ago and Scruton's exposure of this "nonsense" is badly needed. Others (Camille Paglia, Bruce Bawer, Scott Thronton, Allan Bloom, e.g.) have weighed in on this as well, but Scruton's philosophical background makes for compelling reading. It can be a bit esoteric (as is often the case with explanations of abstract concepts) but this is highly recommended for those who want to look beyond the current media commentariate for deeper understandings of why things are happening as they are. No one has all the answers (as Scruton readily admits), but there's a great deal to chew on in this book.

By Ian Kluge This book is essential for those who want two things: (1) a critical overview of new left thinking and (2) specific well-explained reasons why new left thinking is logically untenable and/or a smorgasbord of inanities and platitudes - or in some cases, no more than an intellectual prank. (Lacan, Deleuze and often Foucault with his 'histories'). Scruton does an excellent job in pointing out key difficulties in their work, and in clearly explaining why - in one way or another - the nature and extent of their flaws. I especially like his blunt spoken ways i.e. no weasel words, that so often mar philosophical books by academics. What makes this book especially important is that so many of these non-sensical ideas have trickled down the street level, especially to students who adopt them with a great deal of passion but very little understanding and/or life-experience. Scruton's book is a perfect antidote against such neocortical poison because it effectively combines background knowledge with incisive analysis. If I were still teaching, I would use this book in my classroom.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. A Serious and Important Book By Richard B. Schwartz This is an impressive and important book. Roger Scruton accepts the task of investigating the thought of a number of prominent 20thc leftist intellectuals, paying particular attention to the writings of Eric Hobsbawm, E. P. Thompson, Ronald Dworkin, Jacques Lacan, George Lukacs, Sean-Paul Sartre, Slavoj Zizek, Jurgen Habermas and Michel Foucault, with shorter examination of Edward Said and a short-short mention of Jacques Derrida. This is a very difficult task because many of these writers have voluminous bibliographies and write with a lugubrious, sometimes impenetrable style (the near totalizing ‘abstraction’ of which leads to a set of key points). A prominent literary critic once compared a task such as this to fighting with Joel Chandler Harris’ tar baby. If you engage with the shape-shifting beast you may never come out again. On the other hand, you cannot engage with it without reading these writers’ works, lest you be called a dilettante, a ‘vulgar conservative’, or all manner of other ugly names. Scruton is none of these, but he is very brave and tenacious to suffer through the volume of material which is here under investigation. His bottom line is that there are many common threads here, nearly all of which begin with Marx, sometimes as adumbrated by Hegel or filtered through such a shared teacher as Alexandre Kojeve. Scruton is fair in recognizing that some of these individuals’ works are impressive intellectual accomplishments, even if their conclusions are ultimately antinomian. He argues, very impressively, that many of these individuals have invented new ways of saying the same old thing. They have enlisted linguistics, epistemology, psychology, sociology, communication theory, etc. to argue, at bottom, that we will never be happy until we achieve a utopia in which the bourgeoisie is liquidated, false consciousness is transcended, the proletariat ‘rules’ as a result of its leadership by the leftist elites/intellectuals/cognoscenti. Scruton demonstrates that the proponents of these views care little for the fate of those who are tortured, imprisoned or murdered in the process and that many of them do believe in the greatness and rightness of such individuals as Stalin and Mao Zedong. They operate at a level of abstraction that sees actual human beings and their plights as incidental or unimportant. Still, they argue for an ‘end’ which is—to any sentient being—impossible to achieve. While he attempts to be as intellectually honest and transparent as possible he does not pull punches, suggesting that one explanation for their labor is Nietzsche’s observation “that resentment is the real default condition of social beings, who know only that the other has what they want, and must be made to suffer for it” (p. 287).I would have preferred a different title, since this one suggests that the book is a polemic or screed. It is not; it is a studied examination of the thought of a number of prominent leftists and the examination is undertaken with rigor and sophistication. In other words, this is a challenging book that deals with complex thought; it is not a triumphalist exposé of actual fools and frauds (though he does suggest that some—Lacan, e.g.—are very close to the latter).

Americans have been riding bikes for more than a century now. So why are most American cities still so ill-prepared to handle cyclists? James Longhurst, a historian and avid cyclist, tackles that question by tracing the contentious debates between American bike riders, motorists, and pedestrians over the shared road. Bike Battles explores the different ways that Americans have thought about the bicycle through popular songs, merit badge pamphlets, advertising, films, newspapers and sitcoms. Those associations shaped the actions of government and the courts when they intervened in bike policy through lawsuits, traffic control, road building, taxation, rationing, import tariffs, safety education and bike lanes from the 1870s to the 1970s. Today, cycling in American urban centers remains a challenge as city planners, political pundits, and residents continue to argue over bike lanes, bike-share programs, law enforcement, sustainability, and public safety. Combining fascinating new research from a wide range of sources with a true passion for the topic, Longhurst shows us that these battles are nothing new; in fact they’re simply a continuation of the original battle over who is - and isn’t - welcome on our roads.

Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road, by James Longhurst

Review

A measure of any book is whether it makes you think beyond its pages, and "Bike Battles" did just that for me. My dad used to tell me that if I got only one thing out of a book--an interesting fact, a point of view I hadn't previously considered, something helpful to my life or just entertainment--the book was worth its cover price. By that standard "Bike Battles" is a bargain. It allowed me to see the last 150 years of riding in America like a mosaic on the wall. I won't look at parked cars the same way again. The book ought to give today's bicycle advocates a sense of their place in history and make them proud to continue the battle.--Grant Petersen"Wall Street Journal" (01/01/2015)

These colorful references, coupled with Longhurst's light and natural writing style, make "Bike Battles" easy to read.--Amy Goetzman"MinnPost" (01/01/2015)

In six chapters, [Longhurst] traces the history of what is essentially road-sharing: first horses and carts mixed with pedestrians; then trolleys and buses; then, after WWII, an overwhelming shift, funded by federal highway dollars, to the primacy of the car.--Joe Garvin"City Living Seattle" (01/01/2015)

Review "Bike Battles offers a significant contribution to both the growing literature on the history of American bicycling and the immense, well-established literature on urban policymaking. It is scholarship written by a sophisticated historian who draws on sources ranging from the traditional to the wonderfully unusual in order to shed light on the changing history of bicycling's place in American cities."―Christopher Wells, author of Car Country

"Bike Battles is masterly in its treatment of public policy toward the 'roads as commons,' and has given new depth to our understanding of cycling in America. I envy the light and easy style of the author."―Glen Norcliffe, author of Ride to Modernity

"Bike Battles is a thoroughly fascinating history of the competing claims and conflict between cyclists and motorists for space on our public roads. Spanning the fields of law, politics, public policy, and pop culture, Bike Battles is essential reading for everybody from cyclists, advocates, and lawyers, to urbanists, students, researchers, planners, and policy and decision-makers, and is destined to become a classic in the field."―Bob Mionske, author of Bicycling & the Law

"James Longhurst gives us a whole range of new ways to look at those moments of confusion, uncertainty, and rage experienced by anyone who has spent much time on roads shared by cars and bicycles. Bike Battles is academically rigorous but easy and fun to read. This is really my kind of nerdiness. I recommend it for anyone who feels stuck in polarized conversations about how we use our roads."―Elly Blue, author of Bikenomics

"James Longhurst documents the century-long story of a common, indeed ubiquitous device, the bicycle, which has never been satisfied to stay between the lines of modernist culture. First too fast, now too slow, once too elite, now too plebian, it has always been the square peg in the round hole of urban social order. The 'battle' in Bike Battles isn't between cars and bikes; it's between individuals and the infrastructure state."―Bruce Epperson, author of Bicycles in American Highway Planning

About the Author James Longhurst is associate professor of history at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and author of Citizen Environmentalists.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating history of the politics of mixing cars and bikes on the road By Kent Price The author gives the history of the road as a "commons" with use shared by trucks, cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. In addition to an Introduction and Conclusion, contents are as follows:1. Get out of the road! The battle over the public roads in America, 1870-19002. The right sort of people. The battle over taxes, side paths, and roads at the turn of the Century (1900)3. The rules of the road. Bicycling in the automotive age, 1900-1930.4. Victory bike battles. The debate over emergency transport in World War II.5. 1950s syndrome. Excluding bikes from suburban streets, interstate highways, and adult lives.6. Bikes are beautiful. The bike boom, bikeways, and the battles over where to ride in the 1970s.At the end, there are Acknowledgments, Abbreviations, Notes, Bibliography, and Index.I learned many interesting details of bike history. As a child in the 1950s, I lived in a hilly part of town but only had a 3-speed. Apparently, the 10-speeds available outside the USA were kept out by tariffs. As a bike rider, I always wanted to ride on the same road as the cars, since the cars "swept" the debris from the path, in contrast to dedicated "bikeways". Not covered are the use of bike helmets and the battles to carry bikes on public transportation systems. All in all, an enjoyable read for the bike enthusiast. The emphasis is more on politics and laws, not on technology.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable and enlightening! By Matt I bought Bike Battles after seeing an intriguing presentation by the author at a book signing. Lately I had been avoiding the bicycle genre because so many bike books are a dime a dozen, padded with common sense observations and complaints.Bike Battles is much better! It covers lesser-known aspects of bike history such as the side path movement, WWII rationing, and provides thoroughly researched examples of how we wound up with a car-domianted culture. I bicycle daily for transportation and am involved in bike and pedestrian transportation advocacy. Bike Battles helps me better understand my own personal experiences while bicycling and also provides a historical background for my advocacy goals. It will help me better strategize my messaging and learn from pitfalls of the past.Overall Bike Battles is a worthwhile read with a refreshing perspective!

54 of 56 people found the following review helpful. I've Never Bought Vegan Ice Cream...And Now I never have to thanks to this book. By livvie I think when one becomes vegan, they don't stop to think what how that is going to affect desserts at times. Sure, you can get blondies, cookies, cakes and pies, but when it's sweltering, and you want to have a cup (or cone) of ice cream....Banana "soft-serve" won't cut it.Enter: Hannah "Queen of Desserts" Kaminsky. I got her second cookbook (Vegan Desserts) for the ice cream recipes and the meringue. I demanded an ice cream maker for this cookbook alone. What Hannah excels at is that she doesn't just make "traditional" ANYTHING. It's exotic and different and pushes you (and your taste buds) to explore a whole new world of eating. So unlike "The Vegan Scoop", "Lick It" and "Vice Cream" which has (soy milk, coconut milk, and cashew cream as bases) but the recipes all follow the same path:Vanilla - add extract, sugar, milk, blend, cool, churnStrawberry - add berries, sugar, milk, blend, cool, churn(and so on)Hannah makes French Vanilla ice cream. Not your basic Cookie Dough, but Cookie Dough Monster. Not just Strawberry but Strawberry and Lemon Curd. and so on and so forth. Its the simple tweaks on classics, and things you'd never think about (watermelon sorbet? heck, yeah! (never would have thought of it). Banana Pudding? Blueberry Muffin? Cinnamon Graham? Check, check and check.I've now made several recipes, and they are VERY easy, and pantry friendly (things that you may not always have on hand would be Agar, Vanilla Beans/Paste (Necessity for the French Vanilla), Citric Acid (optional).) that I can re-call off hand. Most of these equal a quart of ice cream so the cost of making it vs. buying a store brand is comparable (for fruit etc). The ice creams I've made are:French Vanilla. Hands down my go to favourite thing. French Vanilla is my favourite pre-vegan, and I thought I'd never see it again. Hannah has now saved my life, and gave me french vanilla.Strawberry Lemon Curd Ice Cream. DO make. (I used fresh lemons for the curd, instead of lemon juice).Spring Blush Sorbet - super easy and gives you a use for all those rhubarbs you can't think about doing.I wanted to make one "basic" one to see how it worked. (amazing) one multi-step one (not that time consuming) and one sorbet. (delish). The instructions are clear, and easy to follow. the only downside is the cooling time. (I tend to make mine wait 24 hours and let my ice cream bowl freeze for 36 for optimal ice cream pleasure).DO follow Hannah's ice cream eating suggestions (weird, I know, but I feel like it does enhance the experience). She even has mixins and goodies at the back :)Allergy Alert: there is not a lot of ones that call for tofu, vegan cream cheese/sour cream or creamer. (so those are easily bypassable).Health Alert: these DO contain a lot of sugar. I know it's easy to say "it's ice cream!!!" but it's also the food science about it. Sugar is pretty much needed for homemade wares. (Hannah does use agave in some recipes, and other kind of sweetners as well - not overwhelmingly).Presentation: i love the book, it's the same style as Vegan Desserts, so every recipe has a picture, which is as delicious as the wares you are making.Repeat: there is ONE recipe that made it over to Vegan A La Mode from Vegan Desserts and that is the French Vanilla Ice Cream. (I am now kind of wishing that the other ones made it over too so I have them all in one place). But if you were curious if you could make do without it? heh.. no.This is a must buy for ANYONE wanting to make ice cream, vegan or not (you can use any milk but rice, Hannah suggests) and seriously they are great for any time of the year. Also, as an aside, I find you don't eat AS MUCH of it. they are all so thick and creamy and delicious, unlike store bought where you just pile it all on, this is really just a scoop here, and a scoop there. :)Hopefully Hannah makes a sequel soon! :)

I decided to check it out from the library first to decide if I wanted a hard copy or a kindle copy but I can tell you this right now- I'll definitely be getting a hard copy to keep around since it will be used more frequently!I have only made two recipes. The first I made was the French Vanilla and it was so creamy and decadent. Talk about indulgence! It makes every other vegan vanilla ice cream out there taste boring in comparison. This will definitely be a repeat. The other recipe I made was Double Chocolate Fudge Chunk and this was amazing! It had chunks of fudge in every bite which was painless to whip up and the actual chocolate ice cream had great flavor depth (Hannah never fails in that department).I'm excited to try more recipes and am looking forward to keeping cool with this book this summer.

By Martha Miller-Hall My kids and I have been deliciously making our way through this book this summer, and LOVING the tour! The recipes are great; my 12-year-old has done most of the "cooking" and I'm pleased that the directions are easy for her to follow. If you have a modestly stocked vegan pantry, there isn't any need to hunt down special ingredients - I don't shop any specialty/gourmet/health-food stores and was able to find everything easily, if I didn't already have it.The pictures are beautiful and mouthwatering, causing my kids to drool for hours over "what we're going to make next"...One note: This IS a dessert book. We all realize ice-cream is dessert before purchasing it, right? Sugar can be vegan and we vegans like our desserts just as much as the rest of the world.Whether you think you'll be making ice cream every week or just once in a rare while, this is a valuable and informative book to have - and the pictures are great, just for browsing. I can't say enough about Hannah's book, I love almost everything she creates anyway, but I think ice cream has to be at the top of my list!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Vegan Sweets By Val About thirty years ago I was introduced to vegan cooking and dietary habits. While it has never been something I've ever fully achieved - I had five years as a vegetarian - it is something I continue to enjoy. The recent studies and research suggest that adopting this as part of our lifestyle improves all aspects of our health. I have no idea about that. All I know is that whole foods are more satisfying. This cookbook offers some surprising recipes, such as the Macadamia Coconut Nut Brittle (you had me a Macadamia) and the Vegan White Chocolate Matcha Bonbon. I've not gotten to try the Rose Water Cupcakes, but they are on the to do list. This book includes recipes that utilize raw almonds to make a flour alterative and uses a number of different fruits and nuts that are very tasty. I cannot attest to the calorie load on some of these recipes. But I can say that what we've managed to make have been very tasty.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Do Not Read While Hungry! By Dan Glover Gluten Free Vegan Baking is crammed full of great looking recipes designed for healthy living. Each recipe is laid out in an easy to follow fashion making the baking of it both simple and joyful. Keep this book in your kitchen for easy access. Also makes a great gift!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good vegan cookbook! By Lavender Lady These recipes look really good! Full disclosure, I haven't made any of them yet, but they inspired me to get going. I expected more along the lines of sub applesauce for butter type recipes, but these nearly all call for ground nuts and fruits as the crusts and such, but a lot call for coconut oil as the fat instead. Only one word of warning: you'll need a food processor for most of these, but probably most vegans already have that. I know my life improved when I got mine!

Ted Bassett has worked for more than forty years in the global mining and metals industry with projects ranging from an open-pit operation in post-communist Kyrgyzstan to the scandal-racked Bre-X goldmine in Busang, Indonesia. He’s witnessed numerous instances of senseless risk-taking and reputation-ruining blunders from project managers who simply weren’t prepared enough for the job. Finally, prompted by his family and armed with dozens of case studies gleaned from his own personal experiences, Ted sat down with fellow engineer Jim Cooke and journalist Jennifer Parks to document these true stories—and provide a helpful resource that goes beyond a sterile textbook.

With chapters such as “On Being Principled,” “Dodging Bullets,” and “Safety and the Law,” How to Build a Project: Things They Don’t Teach chronicles Bassett and his family as they travel from the mountains of central Asia to the mines of South Australia. In these dramatic narratives, Bassett navigates sticky foreign politics, budget constraints, and executive temper tantrums in his demanding career…all while his daughter’s cancer battle unfolds.

Filled with practical advice and keen insights, this book is an essential reference tool for engineers and managers seeking to gain an edge in their profession.

A book every young (and more mature) engineer should read. For this reader it was particularly interesting as I was on one of the projects and familiar with a couple of the others talked about.

Everything you want to know about forty of the most iconic BMW motorcycles.

BMW Motorcycles offers history and photography on forty of the most iconic motorcycles built by Germany's leading motorcycle manufacturer: BMW. From the preâ??World War II BMWs that defined performance in that era, to the Earles-forked machines that offered the perfect platform for mounting a Steib sidecar, to the "flying bricks," to the GS (Gelände Sport) series that launched a dual-sport revolution, right up to today's world-class superbikes. All of BMW's bike families are coveredâ??the side-valve machines from the preâ??World War II years, the early overhead-valve performance bikes, the postwar Airheads and Oilheads, the three-cylinder, four-cylinder, and six-cylinder touring bikes, the early pushrod singles, the modern overhead-cam singles, the latest parallel twins, and inline-four cylinder sport bikes. From the first model, the R32 that launched BMW's motorcycle dynasty, to the latest (and fastest) model, the World Super Bike dominating S1000RR, this book captures nearly a century of motorcycling excellence with thorough information and stunning, full-color photography.

A rudimentary look into the connection between nutrition, self- love and community as told by Coach KENYA. This book speaks to exactly what to do mind, spirit and body to care for yourself and how that care expresses itself in the community. My intention is to encourage everyday people who manage tight schedules and limited budgets to incorporate these practices into their lives as a means of leading a happier, healthier and disease free life. •Health is EVERYTHING! •We cannot face the problems that plague our communities if we are not well in our mind, body, spirit and finances. •The solution is a simple proposition: practice self-care and proper nutrition at a basic level and results will follow. Warning: side effects are weight loss, increased self-esteem, and looking & feeling your best!

Runaway inequality is now America’s most critical economic fact of life. In 1970, the ratio of pay between the top 100 CEOs and the average worker was 45 to 1. Today it is a shocking 829 to one! During that time a new economic philosophy set in that cut taxes, deregulated finance, and trimmed social spending. Those policies set in motion a process that greatly expanded the power of financial interests to accelerate inequality. But how exactly does that happen?

Using easy-to-understand charts and graphs, Runaway Inequality explains the process by which corporation after corporation falls victim to systematic wealth extraction by banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds. It reveals how financial strip-mining puts enormous downward pressure on jobs, wages, benefits, and working conditions, while boosting the incomes of financial elites.

But Runaway Inequality does more than make sense of our economic plight. It also shows why virtually all the key issues that we face―from climate change to the exploding prison population―are intimately connected to rising economic inequality.

Most importantly, Runaway Inequality calls upon us to build a common movement to tackle the sources of increasing income and wealth inequality. As the author makes clear, the problem will not cure itself. It will take enormous energy and dedication to bring economic justice and fairness back to American society.

The book is divided into four parts:

  • Part I: What is the fundamental cause of runaway economic inequality? What has made our economy less fair and left most of us less secure?
  • Part II: How does the United States really compare with other major developed countries?  How do we stack up on quality of life, health, and well-being?
  • Part III:  What does economic inequality have to do with so many of the critical issues we face, including taxes, debt, education, criminal justice, racism, climate change, foreign trade, and war?
  • Part IV: What concrete steps can we take to begin building a fair and just society?

From the book: “There is nothing in the economic universe that will automatically rescue us from runaway inequality. There is no pendulum, no invisible political force that ‘naturally’ will swing back towards economic fairness. Either we wage a large-scale battle for economic, social, and environmental justice, or we will witness the continued deterioration of the world we inhabit. The arc of capitalism does not bend towards justice. We must bend it.”

Review

Salon-

…"the book has many virtues besides its timeliness. And more than most of the other high-profile books on inequality in recent years, Runaway Inequality doesn’t just explain where the U.S. economy went wrong; it also explains how American citizens can organize to get it back on track.”

About the Author After attending Oberlin College and Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (MPA 1975), Les cofounded and currently directs the Labor Institute (1976). He designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for unions, worker centers and community organizations.  He is the author of The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor (2007), and The Looting of America (2009) and How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour (2013).

By Laura McClure This pithy book is a powerful tool for fighting inequality – packed with information and insights that will propel you out of your chair and into action. For both newbies and activists who already know something about runaway inequality, this book pulls it all together. It ties our extreme economic divide and the takeover of our economy by financial elites to everything from racial injustice to climate change. Easy-to-grasp charts and graphs make it all pop. I had an “aha moment” on almost every page.Runaway Inequality isn’t a stern tome about what’s wrong that leaves you feeling depressed and paralyzed. As in all his books, Leopold is a friendly, sometimes playful, and always encouraging guide. In clear, accessible language, he informs, clarifies, and points the way to action. He urges us to step outside our issue “silos" and see the big picture. We can make different choices about our economy and our political system – if we dare to think big and work together.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The author Les Leopold has a way of being able ... By Dan The author Les Leopold has a way of being able to connect the dots that many people are unable to do. We find that the inequality in the United States is not just a series of happenstance and coincidences. Instead we see how the powers that be have crafted laws and regulations (or eliminated them) over time and then mislead the public on the eventual effects of those policies. This is an eye-opening MUST READ!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A must read By Bakari Chavanu Bernie Sanders should endorse this book! Runaway Inequality explains and provides evidence for the huge economic divide in the US. Leopold explains how Wall Street, out of control banks and debt, ever increasing privatization of the public property, goods, and services we depend, the rampant destruction of the environment, low wages, police brutality, and much more, are making it very difficult for many people in the US to reach our fullest potential and live productive, happy lives. This book is indeed an activist guide. It's easy to read, and it has lots of useful data for activists and ordinary citizens to use to argue why we need political, economic, and social revolution in this country. You may be very surprised in reading this book by the true average wage gap between workers and CEOs in this country. You should already know how less than 1% of the population has amassed enough personal wealth to support themselves for ten to fifteen lifetimes. This guide would make a useful read for group discussions. Students could use it as the basis for research papers on related topics, and unions could use it as a guide to educate workers about why and how changes are needed.Runaway Inequality connects the dots and shows how trickle down economics has not and does not work for the vast majority of works of workers and citizens. It explains in clear language the role and dangers of finance capital and how it contributes to the economic divide, and ultimately how it contributes to the economic crisis of 2008.If you have never read a book like this, I strongly encourage you to do so.
