We’ve all been there. Well, most of us. That childhood dream of the most magical place on earth. We’ve all dreamed of seeing the sparkling castle in real life and hugging our favorite characters. But what happens when that childhood dream really signifies something much more—an escape, a rising above the ashes? And then it’s dashed against the rocks of uncertainty? Of poverty and hopelessness? In this engaging, reflective, emotional true story, Nathan Monk takes you through the real life journey of a hopeful father struggling to hold his family together in an intimidating world of poverty and homelessness. Villains and evil witches lie in wait, ready to prey on their victims, while supportive sidekicks and fairy godmothers save the day in this remarkable tale of a child who rose from living in parking lots to becoming a widely recognized advocate for the homeless. Written partially from his perspective as a child, Nathan ties these stories back to current issues of social justice and the need for reform in the way we address poverty in America. A perfect blend of fairytale and in-depth expose, you’re invited on an intimate journey with Nathan and his family as his father attempts to follow through with his mythical promise of unifying his family, righting wrongs of the past, fighting against a clock as it quickly approaches midnight, and Chasing the Mouse. Overflowing with passion, this touching, needed story will inspire you to reach for your own dreams, knowing that no matter the obstacles, no matter the risk, dreams really can come true … if you just believe.

Am inspirational tale of our times By Debbie Tanis This is the story of how a boy who experienced homelessness as a child grew up to advocate for the homeless in his community. Woven into the story of the boy are stories of how the man opened his heart to the downcast of society. The boy who lived through a family's difficulties became a man who refused to stand by and ignore those who have nothing. I enjoyed the narrative but, more importantly, finished the book with a feeling that hope really can rise up through desperation to shape us into people who are more compassionate toward each other.

By Michael Johnson The idea of Disney World was the hope that kept a young boy struggling on as his family's poverty quickly reduced them to homelessness, a burning ember of hope. The lessons learned in that childhood later transform the man into an advocate for the poor, the outcast, and the homeless. An engaging read bouncing between the Author's childhood homelessness, his current advocacy for the poor and homeless in Pensacola, Florida, and the transition from the powerlessness of a homeless childhood into the eye-opening confusion of parenthood and community activism. Chapters present a theme, broken into sections that bounce back and forth in related events. I normally don't sit down and read a book through, but I did read "Chasing the mouse" cover to cover in one sitting. While Love thy neighbour is very evident in the telling, the book isn't really focusing on the religious aspect - He's not preaching here, just telling you what it felt like, and the changes those experiences can make in a person.I plan on purchasing a few extra copies to give to family and friends.

By Marie-helene Tedford Father Nathan Monk is a great man who inspires me to love and help those who have not had any luck in life. His book is written in such a way that you feel the author is right next to you and telling you the story of his incredible life. I am touched that his childhood dream of someday going to the Disney kingdom is what kept him hoping for a better future when his family was homeless and hungry. I admire his difficult decision to follow his principles and to continue respecting all people and their right to love whomever they want when his church leaders took away his priesthood because he supported the right to marry for all men and women.
