Review "There is no better or more comprehensive work on the subject available.… THE handbook on junk rigs." —Sailing
About the Author H. G. Hasler was a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines and was awarded the OBE for his services in Norway in 1940 and the DSO for leading a daring raid on German shipping in 1942. He was the author of cruising guides, invented the modern yacht wind vane self-steering gear, and founded the Single-Handed Transatlantic Race in 1960 and the Round Britain Race. J. K. McLeod became close friends with HG Hasler in 1961, sailing Hasler’s junk-rig Jester on Loch Ness where Hasler was setting up the first Loch Ness Monster investigation. He became Hasler’s partner in 1963 and was his enthusiastic disciple until Hasler’s untimely death. He currently sails his own 47-foot Chinese schooner Ròn Glas to further develop the advantages of the junk rig.

Handling/Building the Junk Rig By william e katakis The theory and relevant illustrations along with specific commentary make this a unique and mandatory Must Read for anyone considering serious sailing conditions in a junk rig sailboat. If you are going to design your own rig, you've still hit the jackpot. This book will save you about a hundred years of costly mistakes, serious wallet aches, and may even save your life. The Junk rig is fantastic , but like any rig you need knowledge to use it correctly and safely. By the way, I'll take the Junk Rig over anything out there today, it is forgiving, inexpensive, more durable than dirt, and usable in heavy weather as well as sunset cruises on a smooth day. With so little pressure on any point of the sail, they just don't rip. You could shoot holes in it with a shotgun and you wouldn't affect performance much. Try that with a western rig, and the pressure would rip it apart. I can't give this book anything but 5 stars.

It established the subject and lexicon. For years, I have owned and lived aboard the last NA29 to come out of the mold, It is a shame that this particular design is not included in the book. Also, I believe the book was written before the research on cambered sails on Junks was in, and it only discusses "flat cut" (no camber) sails. For that information, one pretty well has to go to the Junk Rig Assn. or Yahoo Junkrig Group.Fair winds...Dave Chamberlin

I've seen this book referenced numerous times online by people in discussions, but that didn't prepare me for the thoroughness of this book. And while it seems junk sail experiments have "progressed" into less-traditional (i.e. more rectangular) high-aspect sails and/or split junk sails, the authors of this book have an adequate explanation for why this book may not be, and may never be, obsolete: the calculations and specs in this book are tested to work - to be *practical* when used. There's something to be said for an appropriate dose of pragmatism. So glad they reprinted this and it's affordable again.
