Richmond, Virginia: On the morning of October 19, 1979, parolee James Briley stood before a judge and vowed to quit the criminal life. That same day, James met with brothers Linwood, Anthony, and 16-year-old neighbor Duncan Meekins. What they planned—and carried out—would make them American serial-killer legends, and reveal to police investigators a 7-month rampage of rape, robbery, and murder exceeding in brutality already documented cases of psychopaths, sociopaths, and sex criminals. As reported in this book, the Briley gang were responsible for the killing of 11 people (among these, a 5-year-old boy and his pregnant mother), but possibly as many as 20. Unlike most criminals, however, the Briley gang's break-ins and robberies were purely incidental—mere excuses for rape and vicious thrill-kills. When authorities (aided by plea-bargaining Duncan Meekins) discovered the whole truth, even their tough skins crawled. Nothing in Virginian history approached the depravities, many of which were committed within miles of the Briley home, where single father James Sr. padlocked himself into his bedroom every night. But this true crime story did not end with the arrests and murder convictions of the Briley gang. Linwood, younger brother James, and 6 other Mecklenburg death-row inmates, hatched an incredible plan of trickery and manipulation—and escaped from the “state-of-the-art” facility on May 31, 1984. The biggest death-row break-out in American history.

REVISED REVIEW Another unveiling of a grisly true tale By Grady Harp Florida author Jack Rosewood inherited his fascination for heinous crimes from his father, a journalist covering major grim crimes, e.g. Ted Bundy. He is fascinated with serial killers – their development psychologically, their preparation for their life of crime, and the details of how they made their bloody black marks on the world. The movie star handsome Rosewood lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife and two children. This is now his eighth inimitable book from his series HISTORICAL SERIAL KILLERS AND MURDERERS. This book is co-authored by Dwayne Walker who has written a number of non-fiction books on Texas history, world history, the history of warfare, and now has conducted research and writing on the topic of terror and how it affects populations – the reason he joins Jack on the series on serial killers.Jack’s writing style completely captures the essence of the serial killers he studies. His astute studies of the various serial killers about whom he is providing biographies is not only fascinating reading material, but also a probing investigation of the psychopathology of serial killers. This book opens with a ghastly scene: ‘The anonymous-looking apartment house on Barton Avenue hadn't been opened for three baking-hot days. Opening the door, the investigators were blasted with a wave of heat and rot—overwhelming. They had experienced this before—everything but the snakes writhing across the bloody floor.’We know we are in for gore! The synopsis of this short but pungent book details the following true history: ‘Richmond, Virginia: On the morning of October 19, 1979, parolee James Briley stood before a judge and vowed to quit the criminal life. That same day, James met with brothers Linwood, Anthony, and 16-year-old neighbor Duncan Meekins. The biggest death-row break-out in American history.’It is easy to see why the reading of this series of books is addictive – the terror they unearth is astonishing all the more so because it is reportage. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 15

By gremelkin I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book contains adult language, graphic depictions of extreme violence, and sexually explicit scenarios, all of which may be offensive to some readers.True stories are so much more fascinating than fiction. Hell, you can't make up stuff like this! The Briley Brother's robberies and break-ins served as excuses to rape, torture, and murder. They got their thrills through terrorizing their victims. The author does a tremendous job of getting inside their psyche and helps the reader experience the "thrills" of the Briley Brother's crimes, as well as the terror of the victims. And just when you thought it was over... Prison Break! Six death row inmates manage to escape from a "state of the art" facility in the largest death-row break out in history.

By Angela Johnson I received a free copy of this book, from the author via Librarything, in exchange for a fair and honest review.OMG!The evil of some people astounds me.This book gave me goosebumps and not for nice reasons either. The author told a spine tingling tale of evil men doing doubly evil things, only it is not fiction or make believe it is true life crime.Monsters really do exist and this book covers a couple of them.Very well written and easy to read.I was both enthralled and sickened by the tale told.I would have been more than happy to have spent $$ on this!
