Great book for those who camp or are considering going camping By lashon hunter First since I have a large family I cook a lot and I’m always up for new recipes. The author did a great job explaining what you need to know, from the equipment needed to the preparation and care to the directions of the recipes. I will try the Breakfast Biscuits, Fruity French Toast and the Rib Eyes for the Ravenous and so many more. The recipes take basic knowledge and heck of a lot of experience with that being said would I recommend this book to anyone? Of courseI have a lot of friends who camp now I can go along and have something to bring to the table. Therefore this book was very helpful for me. You learn something new every day now I can cook a whole meal with just a few things.

On October 10, 1888, the worst train disaster in the history of Pennsylvania took place at the Mud Run railway station. The victims were excursionists who had traveled from Scranton to Hazleton to celebrate the birth of Father Mathew Theobold, the Irish Apostle of Temperance, with a parade and picnic arranged by the Catholic Total Abstinence Union. In anticipation of moving as many as 10,000 passengers between Hazleton and Scranton on eight trains, consisting of eighty-seven cars, the Lehigh Valley Railroad had issued special orders to its crews, the most important of which was to "protect your rear." After the Father Mathew Men had marched and the Father Mathew Cadets had displayed their skill in precision drills, the disciples of temperance headed for the Hazleton train station and home. It was on their return to Scranton that sixty-four people would meet their deaths on the Lehigh Valley road. This book tells the story of what went wrong on that beautiful autumn day at a remote signal station in Carbon County.

As a descendant of two of the victims, I was given the gift of knowledge about an event which clearly shaped my grandfather's drive and ambition. For anyone who lives/d in the Minooka, Scranton area of Pennsylvania, it is an historical account of the ultimate cover up. For those who don't, it is an accounting of an event which was overlooked by many only a few days after it occurred. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Tragic Slice of Americana By Amazon Customer Editor’s Book ReviewBy Rick Sedlisky,Editor, eZine, a bi-monthly publication of the Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern PennsylvaniaThe Mud Run Train Wreck A Disaster in the Irish-American CommunityBy Mary Lydon Simonsen(Cover artwork: Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly, “Torpedo on the Tracks” VOL XIV – No 2, August 1882)It is commonly known that “way back when” in Northeast Pennsylvania and other parts of our country, the only major source of information, other than word of mouth, was the newspapers. The newspapers reported, but was all they reported accurate? On October 10, 1888, one of the worst train wrecks in American history took place in Northeast Pennsylvania. Sixty four lives were lost when on the return north from Hazleton to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, the seventh section of an eight-section Lehigh Valley Railroad train “telescoped” the rear end of Section Six that led to the loss of life and permanent injury to many at a place in Carbon County known as Mud Run.What is “telescoping”? A telescope is made of parts that collapse on each other to make the telescope a condensed unit. In the 19th Century, railroad passenger cars were made of wood and vulnerable to being “telescoped” if hit from behind by a steam engine. The engine would hit the last car of the passenger train and “telescope” it into the car ahead. The second last car of Section Six was the victim of “telescoping”.Author Mary Lydon Simonsen, through in-depth newspaper research, combined all she found that enabled her to document the tragedy that affected many Irish-Americans in the communities of Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Minooka (now a part of Scranton) and Pleasant Valley, now known as Avoca. In the late 19th Century, people formed societies that were opposed to the consumption of alcohol. They were known as “Temperance Societies” and with many, were very popular. Based on the words of Fr. Mathew Theobold from Ireland, many Irish people followed and remained true to his words.Ms. Lydon Simonsen discusses Fr. Theobold and how Irish immigrants carried his words to their new home in Northeast Pennsylvania. She effectively builds from his words about how the societies were formed and how every year in Northeast Pennsylvania there would be a “convention” or a “gathering” of temperance people at one city. All would come together to support their movement and carry it forward. The October 1888 gathering, which was arranged by the Total Catholic Abstinence Union, was held at Hazleton where 10,000 people arrived via the Lehigh Valley Railroad. A total of 87 passenger cars were provided by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Central Railroad of New Jersey and divided into eight sections of roughly 10 or so cars each. The event at Hazelton went well, but as the author tells us, some at the event smelled of liquor on the return north. That is a minor footnote, but yet an interesting footnote as not everyone was at Hazleton for abstinence reasons. What is more interesting and important are the recollections of those in charge of the train sections and whether or not they did their jobs as expected.Lehigh Valley management issued special orders to crew members, the most important of which was, “to protect your rear”. Lehigh Valley orders were in place and the men were expected to get all home safely. Each section of the train ran 10 minutes apart. There was no room for error on the part of anyone.According to what Ms. Lydon Simonsen found, some Lehigh Valley men did their jobs correctly and some didn’t. For one engineer, it was his first time to be in charge of a passenger train. Again, most is based on newspaper reports and while newspaper reports and accountings by those on the scene don’t necessarily agree completely, it is what she found, documented and shares with readers. Many times a story ends with what happened and does not follow through with reports on the aftermath. Author Lydon Simonsen takes us to the courts, the testimonies of Lehigh Valley employees, survivors and how at that time, employees often worked with very little sleep. In the case of the Lehigh Valley men, they had no choice other than to be on the job, well rested or not. While a good portion of court testimonies is conflicting at best and based on newspaper reports, Ms. Lydon Simonsen leaves it to the reader to decide who told the truth and who didn’t.For anyone interested in Northeast Pennsylvania history, railroads, labor laws that did not favor the worker, and a time in our history when some were opposed to the consumption of alcohol and some within the Roman Catholic Church decided that temperance should be for all, Ms. Lydon Simonsen’s book is an excellent read. The Mud Run Train Wreck: A Disaster in the Irish-American Community is available at http://www.amazon.com/The-Mud-Train-Wreck-Irish-'American/dp/0692348085

Mary Lydon Simonsen writes about the deadly train wreak in Mud Run, Pennsylvania in October 1888. This piece of history is very well written. The story tells you of the night when two of eight trains, returning from a pilgrimage to Hazleton, Pennsylvania collided near the train station in Mud Run. One train was stopped on the tracks a few hundred yards beyond the station. The second train coming around a curve on the other side of the station could not see the stopped train in time to come to a full stop. The engineer on the moving train tried to stop but still collided with the stopped train. The moving train hit the stopped train with such force that it pushed the last car through the second to last car like a collapsing telescope. Both cars were full of men, women, and children. The result of the collision caused carnage too horrible to believe or describe. The book also brings you into the lives of those who survived the horrors as well has those who lost their lives on that faithful night. Mary has a personal reason for telling this story in that one of her ancestors died in the wreck. She has spent over 10 years researching the facts and stories of the people and events at the time before and after the deadly wreck. Her book is a captivating history telling of the times. The stories of the hard working people takes you into a time when the lose of one or more members of a family could have dire consequences on that family and the entire community. Husbands were left without their wives and had to learn how to become a single parent and still provide for the family. The same can be said for the wives who lost their husbands except, they also lost the bread winner of the family. The worst cases were the children who became orphans in a blink of any eye. Mary's book also goes into how the railroad company dealt with the tragedy. The majority of the people involved as well as the people in the surrounding communities worked in the area coal mines. Working in the mines brought about its own level of grief and tragedy. Many of the families touched by the train wreck had already lost family and friends to mining accidents. I highly recommend this book. You will be taken into the way that the actions of a few people could leave such heartache and sorrow in the lives of so many. Mary states, in her book, that the story of the Mud Run Train Wreck is an ongoing project. She would like very much to hear from anyone who may have information or photographs of the people or events involved with the Mud Run tragedy. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. You may learn something new about the art of living. If not you may at least have a couple of good laughs. By Dr. Chuck Chakrapani I have been an avid reader of Daniel Klien's books (mostly for their high quality humor), especially those written with his former coauthor Thomas Cathcart. When Klein wrote his solo book "Travels with Epicurus," I eagerly bought a copy, only to be sorely disappointed. The book was a pale imitation of the shorter, but more thought provoking philosophical travelogue "Reclaiming Epicurus" by Luke Slattery. Klein's book wasn't humorous either. Rather his was a book glamorizing old age and romanticizing the way older people spend time reminiscing. No problem with that. But does it have to be glamorized? The author had a stern point of view: if you don't enjoy your old age as an older person is supposed to, then you are missing out. You are somehow a fake if you continue to be a vigorous participant in life when you should be in retreat. Don't you know your station in life? This is somewhat in line with Epicurean thinking. While Stoics like Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca were full participants in life and fearlessly faced its glories and ignominies until their last day on earth, Epicurus thought he was going to find happiness in a secluded compound, exorcising everything he thought would make his life uncomfortable in the long run. His vision of paradise was a sort of Playboy mansion sans wine, sans sex, and sans song, and sans good food. Omar Khayyam's nightmare. The grandeur of everyday life as is somehow eluded Epicurus. No wonder, he was anointed by Klein as the patron saint of life in retreat. So it is with some reluctance I bought this book. I'm glad I did. The old (I mean pre-Travels-With-Epicurus) Klein is back. And what a welcome relief it is! Starting with the title, "Every time I Find the Meaning of Life They Change it", humor is back. In this book, Klein uses humor and personal points of view rather than prescriptions to explain the philosophy of life. Thankfully the philosophy he expounds in this book is not confined to that of Epicurus but extended to the more joyful modern hedonists such as David Pearce as well. The book is based on "Pithies", the quotes Klein collected in his earlier days. It covers a wide range of philosophical thought, all concerned about the art of living: Epicureanism, hedonism, stoicism, pessimism, existentialism, empiricism, nihilism, absurdism, humanism, spiritualism, utilitarianism, pragmatism, moral philosophy, political philosophy, social philosophy, analytic philosophy, atheism, logical positivism, rationalism, monism, materialism, Christian realism and even biblical thoughts find a place, however brief, in this book. The book is based quotes that were collected over a period of several years by the author when he was young. Because they are from a wide range of philosophers and others, it is difficult to write a comprehensive review of the book. What Klein does is to start each "chapter" with a quote such as:"If you believe that feeling bad or worrying long enough will change a past or future event, then you are residing on another planet with a different reality system." (William James)and then in the following few pages explains his thoughts on the quote. In the end, we get a panoramic view of the art of life from several perspectives that all blend into a somewhat unified theory of the art of living. There are also some really funny jokes in the book (as is the case with his pre-Travels books) such as the one about the man who hasn't been to Minsk, and another one about a Sardar going to Mumbai. An afternoon spent reading "Every time I Find the Meaning of Life They Change it" is an afternoon well spent. You may learn something new about the art of living. If not you may at least have a couple of good laughs.

But at the same time, I am skeptical of any philosopher who thinks he knows any absolute answer. I gather that this sequence – question, answer, skeptical response to answer….next question, please – is what professional philosophers do full time. It is like taking a hair-raising spin in a racing car only to discover that the roadway is a Mobuis strip”Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change It is the sixth non-fiction book by American author, Daniel Klein. Now in his seventies, Klein examines and comments on the philosophical quotes and aphorisms he wrote in his “Pithies” notebook during his twenties and thirties, when he was searching for guidance on how to live his life.At this stage of his life, however, “I have to admit that in the past few decades, I don’t seem to have much interest in ferreting out my deepest self…..I know that Nietzsche would admonish me to deal with it, to keep wrestling with this endless regression of internal contradictions, but these days I would rather spend my time making peace with who, for better and for worse, I have become. In the end, instead of aspiring to be an ubermensch, I simply aspire to be a mensch”Klein wrote the words of many men in his notebook of Pithies: philosophers, but also those better known for other roles in life. His list includes Epicurus, Aristippus, David Pearce, Schopenhauer, Camus, William James, Sartre, Nietzsche, Leopardi, Bertrand Russell, Emerson, Paul Tillich, Aristotle, David Hume, Gorgias of Leontini, Samuel Beckett, Aldous Huxley, John Barth, John Stuart Mill, Peter Singer, Machiavelli, Joshua Greene, Derek Parfit, George Santayana, Ecclesiastes, Sam Harris, Francis Bacon, A.J.Ayer, Thomas Nagel, Isaiah, Blaise Pascal, Frank Close, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Viktor Frankl, Adam Phillips, Marcus Aurelius, and finally, Reinhold Niebuhr (author of the book’s title quote).A self-admitted agnostic, on religion, Klein tells us: “I know a great number of very bright and knowledgeable people who are believers. It sometimes makes me wonder if the skeptics have it backward: maybe I am just not wise enough to be a believer”. And that a friend once reminded him that “when an agnostic dies, he goes to the Great Perhaps”. He shares some of the mental challenges he has faced: “Being a hedonist with a conscience can be demoralizing. It turns out that this business of feeling good often comes at the price of somebody else’s deprivation, and then I have to consider which is more important to me: feeling good or being good?”On being present in the moment, he tells us: “…one way we pursue the goal of feeling intensely alive is by tempting death. We jump off cliffs to go hang gliding; we race cars at dangerous speeds; some apparently indulge in the extreme sport of volcano surfing……The payoff of these mortal risks is that they rivet us to the here and now. Facing death, we become supremely alive. Many Existentialist thinkers believe that squarely facing our mortality is the only sure way to become fully alive in the present, although I am pretty sure that Jean-Paul Sartre, with his thick glasses and frail physique, did not have volcano surfing in mind”.Klein’s commentary touches on a myriad of subjects: happiness, free will, suicide, pessimism, friendship, humour, altruism, the herd mentality, absolute belief systems and intolerance. You would, of course, expect a book on philosophy to be filled with wise words, and this one is, but it also contains plenty of laugh-out-loud observations (even the glossary, which ought to be read at the beginning, is amusing), as well as the odd lump-in-the-throat moment. A very enjoyable read. 4.5 stars

A variety of philisophical approaches to life's biggest "whys" compared and contrasted By M Jeff Sanyour Sanyour Associates Each chapter starts with a quote, leading to a rumination by the author, illustrations a variety of approaches to the big questions. Opinions based on years of thought are offered and it is a great way to survey the field of philosophy. No one idea predominates. And the author also compares his attitude earlier in his life when he first read some of these lines to how they sound to him in the present day. Ebook PDF Online The Power Of Understanding Women: How To Understand Your Wife, Feel Fulfilled As A Man, And Recover From A Sexless Marriage, by Damien White

Have you ever wondered what your wife wants from you as a man? The concepts in this book will explain how a woman thinks and what she wants to feel in connection to you. Women experience themselves very differently to men. By understanding women you gain the knowledge and power to make her feel like a woman. And when this happens everyone wins. For many years I misunderstood women, and I know that I am not alone. It is too easy to relate to women as if they are small men. You cannot understand women by using your typical male way of thinking. When a man/husband doesn't relate to his partner/wife in the right way she closes down. Sex for a woman is as a result of certain conditions, it doesn't happen out of convenience or 'just because' you are married.

In this book you will learn

  • How a woman thinks about herself and her world (this is very important to know)
  • What you have as a man that women actually want from you
  • Why women become sexless in a marriage, and how to recover from a sexless marriage
  • The one word that fully explains what she wants to experience with you regularly
  • How to behave around your wife when she is upset
  • Why you should care about being the man she wants you to be It can take a husband many years to understand how to behave in relationship to his wife. Too often it is too late. She will not put up with a man who cannot and will not lead her into states that she knows deep down she wants to feel and explore. It is your job as a man to act like a man, and be the man that causes her to fully express her feminine beauty and passion. It is likely that you have been clueless up until now about a woman's desire to feel certain feelings, and how when these feelings are missing, she will close down and become non-sexual towards you. If you want to recover from a sexless marriage, if you want more affection and more intimacy from your wife, then you have to act first. Be the man, and then she can be a woman. This is what she wants to experience and feel. When she does there will be no limits to the intimacy and love, and sex, that she gives back to you. By reading this small book you will hopefuly begin to live as a more mature man and live your life as it was meant to be lived.

The Power Of Understanding Women: How To Understand Your Wife, Feel Fulfilled As A Man, And Recover From A Sexless Marriage, by Damien White

About the Author After a long-term relationship ended in 2001, Damien White embarked on a quest to better understand women and female psychology. After several years of research and observing the way women behave and speak, close female friends began discussing their relationship frustrations and desires with him. This book is the result of a married male friend suggesting he write something to help men understand their wives needs and wants, the way they think, what they notice, how they want to feel and what is important to them. Ironically, upon reading this book that same friend's wife suggested women will get as much out of this book as men.

My Review By Amazon Customer I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. When I first looked at the title, I thought it was about the benefits of understanding women, but in reality it was mostly about how to understand womenIt was great that the author stated what readers should expect from this book, and who the target audience is for. As someone giving advice I would expect the author’s credibility to be stated in the beginning. Why should I learn from you? Where is the source of your knowledge? These things I would like to know. For instance it could have been from your own experience with life and how what you have gone about it, is advice worth sharing. Or the information is backed up with research, or both.Other than the credibility, I feel that the author’s presence in the story is missing. The author is giving advice but, I believe it would be best to have an anecdote going on. I want to see how the author has applied this, and how it has worked for them. In any book I’ve read where the author is trying to impart some of their knowledge, they always accompany it with their own story. It makes them seem real, more easy to relate with and helps in really driving home the message. It also make their work more interesting to read, because of how well it was written, it was as if I was there to experience the scene.I would refrain making bold statements such as, “Women crave attention from men,” because it’s a general statement that does not apply to everyone. Unless you are backing it up with well recorded facts, I would argue against stating it. I would try to refrain mentioning anything to do with Gender roles as well, seeing as it’s different nowadays. For example, chapter 8 implies that men don’t take care of their babies.Overall, I would suggest that the book be written properly, the opening especially could have been done better. Use engaging language and personal stories to help the book move along. When it comes to speech, I would like to see something more realistic. For example the last chapter had weirdly phrased sentences that seemed very unnatural.

Crash-course in understanding women By Sanjin I received a complimentary book in exchange for my honest opinion. There are many books that claim that they have secrets to human relationships, brain of a woman or saving your relationship by giving insight into woman's feelings. This is one of those books. It is a very short book that tries to give some helpful pointers to men about how to understand women, how to behave around them and how to be a "man". That latter thing didn't sit with me well. The advice is mostly sound and well-meaning but some of it revolves around notion that a man must behave "manly" so that woman can be "womanly". That is a broad generalization of gender and I think it definitely does not apply to every woman or every man.Luckily, that is a small part of the book and it is not the base of the subject matter. The rest of it is good advice and it is always great to be reminded from time to time on some of the nuances of romantic relationships.

Short and amusing read By U4ever NOTE: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. It's always nice to read a book that will remind you or teach you, if you don't know already how to act towards a woman. I believe that both men and women might enjoy this book.Men could learn something from it and women could find it interesting reading what writer think about how women think, what they want and how they act. However, many things are a bit too repetitive which is the reason why I gave 4 and not 5 stars.Short and amusing read.Highly recommended.

The Gift Giver, by Jacob Haslem, Nick Allen

About the Author Jacob Haslem was born in Cedar City, Utah, but grew up in Greybull, Wyoming from the time he was 5-years old. He had many memorable adventures as a child and youth, and has always had a great appreciation for a good story. Jacob began writing poetry regularly in his early teens. He took inspiration from rock music lyrics, movies, literature, and scripture. The Gift Giver marks his first effort to write a book of any kind. Having been brought up in a close and strong family with a firm faith in God and Jesus Christ, he has always aspired to be a good family man. He has been married since 2006 to his best friend, Whitney Scott. Together they have two sons, Ethan and Mason. They met in, and live near, Whitney's home town of Modesto, California. She and his two sons are his whole world. Jacob's hobbies and interests include: most anything creative, sports, coyote hunting, really good food, music, good stories, movies, and the occasional video-gaming session with his brother. Nicholas Allen was born and raised in Modesto California. In 2011, he moved all the way to Riverbank, California, where he currently resides with his wife, Kelsi. They have no children (yet). Nick has a passion for story-telling, and can oft be found entertaining groups of friends, family, and innocent bystanders with witty, and occasionally epic, tales of his daily life. He dreams of one day being able to write books, and tell his stories to the world. He and Jacob have known each other for a number of years, but this is their first project together. He also enjoys good food, a good joke, and afternoon naps. However, more importantly, he loves the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and cherishes the opportunities he has been blessed with in his short life to experience the gospel in action. The Gift Giver is a blessed project that he hopes will touch families in a positive way. He feels honored to be able to work on this book that he believes will become a timeless tradition in homes and hearts.

I will admit that the illustrations first caught my eye, they are beautiful! When I read it, I cried! The book brings you the story of how Santa came to be. However it goes deeper than that. The moment I read this book I wanted to share it with everyone! Also I knew that it would become a part of our family's Christmas tradition. It is a book that has to be shared. Our kids are older and they loved the book. I look forward to someday reading this book to my grandkids! I am not related in any way to the writers of this book. I am simply someone that is so happy to have found this book and I believe that if enough people hear about it, it will become a beloved classic!

The creativity and originality are superb. The artwork is awesome. The story is beautuful and told in a way that engages and captivates my children. Also, important to me, the main idea of the book demonstrates a firm belief in God and his Son Jesus Christ, something sadly missing from so much about how most of the world celebrates Christmas today. This book is sure to take its place amongst the great childrens Christmas books of all time.

We read it at least 3 times a week. It's such an incredibly worded book that keeps the joys of Santa for the little kids, but teaches them in a way they understand. Both my 6 and 4 year olds request this for story time frequently.

By iair1234 Unfortunately, I've been tricked into buying this low-quality e-book, made mostly to showcase that his own non-profit provides the service of filing all the paperwork. For $5 you get around 48 pages, with information already available on the internet.Nowadays it's easy to build a profit-machine by publishing amazon ebooks for specific issues, which also make you a "successful author". I also happened to buy other guides on different subjects, which were more decent and provided some insight worth paying $5 or less.If you want to know how to create a non-profit, this ebook will give you the same as a google search for it.There's not even 1 example. It just says: "this is the list of forms you'll hage to fill: A,B,C..." shameful.Reviews can be bought, even on Fiverr. Beware of that. that's my two cents.
