However, "disappointing" depends on what one expects.I was expecting a book that described the technical details of the various means of navigation -- e.g., how the sextant works and how to use it; how the GPS satellites work; and the like -- that is, as navigation devices evolved, I was expecting a technical explanation of how each one worked.Instead, the book presents very little technical information and a lot of history and personalities.I enjoyed reading it but would like to have had much more.

Eason Being a Smithsonian publication, I was surprised that this book handled the subject material at only a very cursory level. I was disappointed because it was too brief and was below my expectations. However, I gave it 4 stars because it's a pretty good kid's book. In fact it would make a great addition for a middle school library.

By jb3amz This is an interesting book covering the relationship of time to navigation. It gives a history without getting into the minutia. Other reviewers have criticized this, but if you want to know the technical details of things such as GPS, then there are numerous other texts that provide that. However if you are interested in the history of navigation and how it advanced through the years this is good.
